Apple iPhone 17 thread

Those that went from 14 or 15 to the 17 now. A decent improvement or another more marginal one.
Wondering if I should go get one or just do another battery replacement tbh

MKBHD review of the iPhone 17

For the first time in a long while, I agree with MKBHD. The Pro phones are for a specialised group of people who would really use all the added features. The normal devices are perfect for everyday people, with the better screen and refresh rates, better battery life and camera, etc etc. I got my 17 and I am super happy, coming from a 14 Pro.

If you're coming from a vanilla 14 or 15, then this is a solid upgrade. I'd say go for the new phone.

Agree with you. I'm really in two minds between the base and the pro. The telephoto lens is pretty flipping good, however I dont know how often I will use it, perhaps often it since It's so good. I also prefer the look and colours of the base over the monolithic and heavier pro. The aluminum 'scratchgate' is also a bit of a concern too. I dont upgrade my phones often so this is why the pro might be a good option as perhaps I should just spend the extra $$$ and be done with it.

I'm on a 14 Pro at the moment and while there are some decent upgrades, I am wondering if it's really worth the R30k cost vs a R1500 battery fix for another year and hope the 18 will be a BIG change :D

Honestly just want a better camera and my Whatsapp search to work decently again (not sure if this is battery related OR just because I have a bunch of Whatsapp messages).

I am trying to keep my phones as long as possible now thus my changed mindset around upgrades etc.

I hear you. I will add though that the iStore should give you around 10k for your 14 Pro, if it's in good condition and the base 128gb, you'll get more back if it's a bigger capacity device. Also, you can pay your phone off, they're introducing finance options (link), interest-free, that you can then pay off the difference. There are options should you decide to pull the trigger.

And they should pay me commission for selling like this 😁

Are you talking about Pro/Pro Max?? Go ahead and do a Battery Replacement.
The 17 Pro/Pro Max are absolutely amazing but you are not missing out on a whole lot unless you want Apple Intelligence, more so if you have a 15 Pro/Pro Max as those got Apple Intelligence.
If you are coming from 14 Pro/Pro Max I would say go check it out.

If you are coming from 14/15 base iPhone…go ahead and get the 17, it is by far the biggest update to the base iPhone because it got Pro features like: - Larger 120Hz ProMotion display that is a lot brighter
- Significant battery upgrade (~3700mAh) + faster charging
- 48MP UltraWide camera with a larger sensor

The base iPhone is getting a ever closer to the Pro.

Phone not warm this morning, guess it may have been a one time thing after setup and it’s first backup.

Something that I am truly happy about with the 17 PM is Apple’s progressive improvement around antenna technology and signal. We are now at Huawei levels even in terms of WiFi, my 17 PM gets full bars of my WiFi in my room and 2 bars of WiFi in spots where some previous iPhones would lose signal. The 15 PM was also not too bad but it never used to get full bars while I am lying in bed.

There is a definite improvement overall on signal, I guess going back to Aluminium may also have a lot to do with it, it seems all round this redesign is bringing a lot of improvements.

So I skipped this upgrade cycle … decided my iPhone 14 Pro Max is still serving me well. I instead upgraded to a sim-only package with Air Pod Pro 3s as an accessory, and already loving life! These are my very first Air Pods, and they easily beat the pants off every other in-ear I’ve owned (only cheaper Samsung and Soundcore models).

I watched a lot of reviews for this before getting it and the general consensus is that they’re a significant upgrade over the AirPod Pro 2s, although some people (Linus specifically) criticise the extra bass. Frankly I love it! The bass is perfect for me.

I highly recommend anyone who treated themselves to an iPhone 17 to get a set of these too added to your contract, totally worthwhile! It’s only R200 odd extra per month, and that’s over 24 months for me.

Personally I'm not a Airpods person, but won't mind if Vodacom had the option to add a Apple Watch to phone contracts, since a watch upgrade is also well over due for me.

Cases was discussed earlier, personally I've always been a fan of Speck Presidio Grip cases, I've had them on all my iPhones since the iPhone 7 and I'm sure they saved me from damage quite a few times over the years.
On all my previous ones the grippy rubber inlays started to show some wear after 2 or so years, but when some rubber pieces started coming off, I just bought a new cover. They say life time warranty, but I never bothered to find out how this works or the T&C's behind it.

Couple of years ago, Vodacom did have a phone and watch combo on contract, can't remember which model it was (could've have been the X). I pre-ordered the upgrade but then cancelled it, got a better deal cash for the watch so just took the phone.

Finally heard back from iStore on my order, they started processing it and came back with a decline. Found out they submitted someone else's details/incorrect bank details on my order so got decline. Went directly to Vodacom instead and should be getting it next week!
