Apple iPhone 17 thread

I'm considering jumping ship from Samsung to Apple
(S21 Ultra to Iphone 17 Base)

Should I be looking at getting from the Istore, Takealot or Amazon SA?
This will be my first apple product
I’m in the same boat I had a S23 Ultra but the battery went so I'm using my S23FE again which is brutal. I'vebeen a Samsung user for many years but I feel like it's time for change. I will have to take it on contract

I cannot imagine the pain of changing platforms in 2026 if you have certain niche apps, but I did help a colleague some months ago switch from her Samsung to an iPhone 15 Pro (if I remember correctly), and that Switch to iPhone app really helped her a lot hey.

Have to say I am very happy with iOS26 now after iOS 26.3 landed, I am not seeing any bugs anymore…I am sure they are there but the ones I had experienced before are completely gone, my 17 Pro Max is running beautifully now, I realised this the other day when I was jumping between a bunch of work apps (Office 365 apps) and the UI being ridiculously smooth and fast with no dropped frames, it finally feels like iOS is now fully optimised for the A19 Pro chip and 12GB RAM.

As an iPhone user what advice would you give me that the can't find in reviews or videos? Basically your day to day experience that might be useful to me

Android and iOS are pretty similar nowadays. WhatsApp chats you can move over nowadays as well Safari is good. The efficiency of Apple controlling the hardware and software is really great. Enjoy it.

A friend of mine was trying to get an iPhone Air at Vodacom and apparently they told him they have no stock left and discontinued it :X3:
Not sure if maybe it is just that store or Vodacom nationwide or even CoreGroup and possibly Apple themselves

Not by Apple I can pick one up (or have it delivered) tomorrow if I wanted one.

They sold it for R15k not long ago.

Technomobi has it for R15499

Anyone dealt with a screen replacement for the iPhone 17? I booked an appointment with the iStore and only when I got there that they said they didn't stock the screen and it takes 5 working days to order and repair. On top of that, they will not order in stock without the customer leaving their phone there - so you have to be without your phone for a week.
Any updates? I got the standard iCare thing, wondering whether to take the extended for R299 but if its gonna be such a pain...

In the end I didn't need to replace my screen - it was actually the glass screen protector that shattered. So thankfully didn't have to go through that process. However, it's worth mentioning that iStore will bring in stock to do same day screen replacement if you complain enough 😅 - just try take it in before hand so they can have a look at the damage to confirm the replacement process.

Lol, thank goodness!

The 17 PM is the first time I have chosen to go without a screen protector due to the antireflective coating, though I think I am going to look for a screen protector that has that soon.

iPhone Air is twice as successful as the iPhone 16 Plus, new report finds

According to a new report from Ookla, the iPhone Air is about twice as successful as the Plus model it replaced, namely the iPhone 16 Plus. The iPhone Air made up 6.8% of the sales of the iPhone 17 generation, whereas the iPhone 16 Plus only made up 2.9%.

The iPhone 17 is also more successful than the iPhone 16, with 7% of the overall pie, compared to 5.9%. Naturally then, as you'd expect, the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max are decreasing their share of the overall iPhone 17 family sales compared to the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max. The image below explains it all. As you can see, the Pro model saw the biggest decrease, so we can assume that some people went for the Air instead of the Pro.

This is based on Speedtest by Ookla samples, so of course it's not official in any way. But if this pans out, it looks like Apple's bet on thinness did pay off at least a little bit. If nothing else, the iPhone Air has a much more obvious unique selling point compared to the iPhone 16 Plus, which was just a bigger iPhone 16.

Interestingly, Ookla says the iPhone Air out-samples Samsung's Galaxy S25 Edge by a margin of 3-to-1 in the US, while the S25 Edge's penetration in the UK and Germany is minimal, with a share of less than 1%.
