Apple iPhone 17 thread

I did the upgrade preorder on a Silver 512GB 17 PM with Vodacom, they say stock is not available.
Just got word that some stock was dispatched, opted for Silver instead of the Deep Blue. Hopefully will have it over the weekend or by Monday.

PS! Also a VC upgrade but via Chatz Cellular.

As a first time iPhone upgrade, can someone please explain. I ordered on the iStore app. It didn’t ask anything about a trade in. The local iStore said I can buy online and then within 30 days come trade in my old device for a cash back in my bank account (not a voucher). Is this true from anyone’s experience?
Thanks I wasn't aware of the cash back thing, I had to dig, but it looks like it is true. On the trade in page on their website right at bottom it says:

1. Cash back applies to any iStore hardware purchase (iPhone, MacBook, iMac, iPad or Apple Watch) provided both the hardware purchase and trade-in are completed within 30 days. Simply bring your trade-in device and proof of purchase; the exchange must be like-for-like (for example, iPhone for iPhone). Cash back will be deposited directly into your bank account.

@DeTector @pandapoker

It is true. With my 15 upgrade, I did the Vodacom upgrade through the iStore's website. Once I received the phone, I took my iPhone 13 to my closest iStore and traded it in and they paid the amount to my bank account. It took a few days to appear (I traded it in on a Friday and received the cashback on the following Tuesday) but it is legit.

If you do the purchase through the iStore website (not the app) you can also indicate you're planning on trading in and they can give you an estimate. You can then add a free online trade in package to your order where they provide you a box and then a courier will collect it and take it to the head office for assessment, and then they'll email you a value. It's convenient, but I didn't have the best experience when we tried it with my partner's trade in on her 13. The technician claimed the iPhone failed the bluetooth test and offered us a third of what it was valued at, despite it connecting to bluetooth accessories no problem. I told them to send it back and took it to the same iStore where I traded in my 13, where it amazingly passed the bluetooth test and I receive the full value for the trade in.

It’s true yes, I’ve done it this way with my last two upgrades

Next question. I have a couple of e-sims on my 15pro. Not too worried about them except the MTN prepaid one which is my main number. How seamless is the transfers to a new device? Do you have to do this separate from the data transfer or do you have to delete and re-add. I have the original QR’s still. Anyone with any experience in this?

Unless MTN has advanced in the last few months; it’ll be a sim swap needed in store, no idea on price though. Believe the MVNOs and Telkom are the only ones doing this for free. Voda you also pay

Yeah most likely esim swap. They don't let you transfer via qr or the migration tools AFAIK

I ordered the iPhone 17 Pro online (no option to collect) last night, and from anyone’s experience, will I get it today or Monday? I stay in CPT City Centre if that helps. I had no options for other delivery methods. Right now on my orders tab, it just says “Next Day if placed before 2pm”. It doesn’t mention the typical 2-5 days or anything else. Thanks

Did you place an order from the iStore? Will all depend if stores have replenished their stock already, when I checked earlier this week, there was no stock in CPT stores.

Yes I placed it through the iStore. I got the silver 17 Pro with 256GB.

I spoke to the iStore and they said because I ordered after 2pm, it’s then the standard 2-3 day wait time but they website just doesn’t show that.

Ohk, so the store you spoke to has stock? That combination has been out of stock (on the website) since last week. I see only the orange has the buy now option.

I didn’t speak to a specific store. I spoke to their contact centre. And the combination has been in and out of stock at random times during the day, and I managed to secure one. It’s already been shipped; it’s just a matter of whether I get it today or Monday. Right now, it’s available in-store at the Queen Hotel store.

I held them in store and far preferred the feel (and look) of the iPhone 17 base model. It feels very premium.

The Pro was a bit too heavy for my liking and it really looks like a power tool, especially in orange.

The pictures and videos don’t do these phones any justice.

Held in hand at the istore today and they are stunning.

Pictures accentuate things such as the bump on the air and the back glass inset and bump on the pro - in reality they are nowhere near as dramatic as they appear in pictures.

If I was in the market now, I’d be happy with any of them (depending on use case) from an aesthetic perspective
