Apple iPhone 3g vs HTC Magic

after much researching, it seems that the iPhone is still a step ahead of the Magic. it's just become a bit more difficult to chose. i was 70/30 to the magic, seems like the scales have tipped the other way now....:confused::confused:
 
Apple will release iPhone OS3, which the current models would be upgraded to. Usually a one click affair with a 250 MB download. It's quick and easy, like updating the software on the iPod. At the same time Apple is planning Generation 3 of its iPhone, which will have more memory (probably up to 32GB, and possibly more variant, some rumoured to be 4GB, 8GB, 16GB and 32 GB). They will have faster processors and and more working memory.
 
I've got the HTC Magic, and it's a fantastic phone. I would seriously look at it.

It looks beautiful, both the form factor and the software
It multi tasks, so you can have some very useful/cool apps running in the background.
It's Android, and there are set to be 18-20 Android phones on the market by the end of the year, which means great interoperability with other people.
The keyboard is brilliant.

I've been using it and it's not at all buggy - quite the opposite. Everything just works. I entered my gmail credentials at when I bought it and instantly have all my contacts, calendar, and mail. Wifi, 3G/HSDPA, GPS, etc just work.

It comes with a 2G MicroSD card. Of course, you can put in whatever size you want. I think they go up to 16G at the moment, but there will be bigger and bigger onces available, so you can grow with technology.

The only drawback it that the Android Market is not yet available in SA, but it will be soon. Once we have the Market, then there are amazing apps. i've just been using Wikitude, and it's mind blowing.

I'm currently testing / playing with the HTC Magic. I've previously hated HTC not because their hardware sucked but also Windows Mobile sucks. Period.

I have to say that I like the phone. I logged onto gtalk and my gmail and calender synced automatically. I think I've gotten too used to it, don't know how I'm going to give it back.

The only downside is the poor battery life - but that's because I have my mail coming in all day. Battery lasts a day or day and a half.

If you're a Google fan, you will like this phone.

My opinion:

I have several friends with iPhones, and I have a Magic. Without the Android Market it would be a toss up between the two. With the Android Market it's Magic all the way.
 
picked up my HTC Magic today. i am so glad i chose the Magic over the iPhone. the Magic suits me and my needs better than the iPhone would. Magic is a really, really nice handset! the OS works very well and the phone feels nice...i'm happy!! :D:D:D

Actually Symbian is quite free of viruses, but it's always polite to scan if you're inserting cards & things on another PC (can't do that on an iPhone either BTW). The package does a whole host of things and not just virus.
 
the Magic, just keeps getting better and better!! got quite a few apps on it (thanks Duncan).

something that i have learnt through this thread, nothing beats "trying it for yourself"!! :D:D:D:D

now where's that Magic apps thread....:D
 
I'm still confuzed... I have handled the Magic and the iPhone and I like the weight of the iPhone more. Unfortunately the Magic was not operational where the iPhone was one you could play with so I really could not get a feel for it.

i was 100% Magic, but just reading more and more reviews I am tilting towards the iPhone.

Talk me in our out of it boyz...
 
iphone doesnt really do it for me.
its an hour of fun (at most). Then it is just that same limited interface.

Well iPhone all round IMO is a better phone. It may not come jam packed with all the features of the Magic out of the box, but the app store which is just a click away will blow you away. There are some awesome awesome apps on there that will keep you very busy.

Don't let people tell you "o but it can't do this and it can't do that"...It may not out of the box, but there is without a doubt an app that you can use.

Also the level of quality of the apps is second to none. They really make good quality, user friendly apps.

I have an HTC as well, and I dunno it just doesn't impress me nearly as much as the iPhone. I am by no means a fan boy, I like all kinds of toys, but the iPhone is all round solid in my eyes.
 
I also tried both and then bought the HTC Magic. The iPhone also felt too limited to me. I am very happy with my choice.
 
After reading an impressive review last night of a Google developer that got given a HTC Magic by Google, and an existing iPhone owner/user I am very heavily leaning towards the iPhone. The only thing that concerns me is that you cant use the iPhone as a modem for your laptop. Aparently v3 of the OS will allow iphone tethering, but that is if the carrier allows it. So the question remains, will Vodacom allow tethering.
 
I got the Magic rather than the iPhone. Very happy with my choice :-)

Someone mentioned owning 'an HTC' earlier, and I'd like to point out that the Magic is very different to other HTC's. Previously HTC was based on Win Mobile, and while HTC tried to put a better interface on top, it was still Win Mobile underneath - which is horrible.

The Magic is a fantastic phone without the iPhone's limitations (both in terms of hardware and the platfrom being firmly in Apple's control). And it will be more compelling as more and more Android phones hit the market (+- 20 this year alone).
