Hello Formates

I am well aware that there are some threads that deal with the Iphone but I have a very specific need to start this one.

I am awaiting my Apple Iphone :D Let's hope before the coming weekend. Now I have been a SonyEricsson MTN man all the years (Ericsson 338 till now the SonyEricsson M600i)

I have now gone with Vodacom and the Apple Iphone, MTN has gone down the drain the past few years and I am sick of the "service not currently available, please try again later" :mad:message I get on my phone no matter where I am and I stay 2km from a tower.

So Vodacom is ALL NEW TO ME:eek: and Apple Iphone is new to me

Commonly know as a double whammy :D

What am I letting myself in for. I have heard that the Iphone cannot send or recieve a MMS and a few other things. It will be greatly appreciated if you can list the pitt falls I am about to let myself in for. Also there is a rumor doing the rounds that Apple is releasing a new Firmware update that will solve all the shortcomings of the current version.

Top of my list of worries are can the Iphone handle
1. Gtalk
2. MSN
3. Mxit

Okay maybe Mxit :Dis not ALL that important but GTALK, GMAIL APP and a application to connect with MSN is at the heart of my concerns.:D

Thanks in advance for all the feedback.:p

Yes, it can handle all of those mentioned.

MMS is coming in the next OS version along with features such as Copy/paste, possible video recording etc. Expected June/July.

If you cannot wait until then, for the meantime, you can download a free trial of SwirlyMMS from Cydia (an installer app installed on your phone when you jailbreak your iPhone). It will cost you a few bucks after that. (Can't remember the exact price)

To read up more on jailbreaking, see my thread. I and almost all others recommend jailbreaking to set your phone free!

GTalk and MSN can be handeled by IM apps such as Fring (free), or BeeJiveIM (not free) or similar free/paid alternatives.

MXit recently released the iPhone version of their app (which is free) on the AppStore which you can download from your phone or PC via iTunes with an iTunes Store account.

Any other questions, don't hesitate to post them in the thread ;)

ok well, there's a mxit and google app in the itunes app store (both are free)
i dont know if the google app supports gtalk.
and gmail works fine.
and i'm pretty sure that there's apps around that'll sort out your msn needs.

the new OS is rumoured to come out in mid june which will include copy-paste and mms.
also rumours of a better maps app with a possibility of turn by turn directions.

I've been a SonyEriccson user since the P800 and with MTN since 2003 .

Last year I moved to Vodacom when the iPhone got released and just couldn't be happier.

You've got nothing to worry about, you'll love the iPhone and Vodacom. ;)

:D Thanks i will be checking your thread on a regular basis. The jailbreak is there a downside to it?

The maps I am not really worried about I have a Garmin Nuvi that gets me around and again Thank you for the help

ROB :D Yeah I remember you were waxing lyrically about how happy you are in your beachfront apartment with Vodacom (at the last meet) you did say that you do not want to Jailbreak your Iphone any particular reason? I am a very impatient guy and love sending MMS :Daround, but I also hate to tamper with software when I know legit updates will be available soon. :p

BTW

Thanks for all the replies:D don't quit YET anybody else who has advice and tips just add them on I will be checking on the thread regularly:cool:

As of Friday I did exactly that - moved from MTN after 15 years (of hell) to Vodacom and I got my iPhone. I have never been happier. The iPhone is just awesomeness. No other words for it. I look at my Diamond now and all I can think of is the shortfalls with windows mobile.

One word of advice - if you jailbreak it check your baseband first, I tried to jailbreak mine on Friday night and it worked except I got no reception/signal. I had to reload the whole phone. Bit of a bummer but yeah I haven’t had time to read on a solution yet.

EDIT: !! Please ignore my word of advice. Rather hear it from the experts as I don't know what I am talking about :D !! There is way to jailbreak it, baseband doesnt matter, just got to read up.

Still very happy with Vodacom where I am. :)

Guess I'm not so 'adventurous' with phones and software anymore, I just want it to work. More than happy to wait till 6 June for iphone OS 3.

Nope, and it is completely reversible!

The only issue I have with Vodacom is the lack of SMS delivery reports (vodacom3G is working on it though!) and lack of EDGE coverage (the 3G makes up for it, but I don't have the 3G iPhone yet :( )

And taking out a contract is a pain if you don't have a credit card :(
So the iphone is difficult to get for cheap if you are part of the prepaid, cash on delivery crowd like myself.

I've noticed a degradation in stability. I'm looking forward to the next OS which will include tethering so I wont need to jailbreak it in future.

Luckily restoring it is a simple matter via iTunes.

Enjoy the phone. :)
