From what I was told by Vodacom, these are also for upgrades.
To be clear: You can't buy a data bundle, but the airtime can be used for OOB data.

Not necessarily, the Cell C contract does not give you any free minutes or SMS's. With Cell C's call rates, you are looking at a monthly bill of R570+ upwards, more than the iPhone 240S deal... The iPhone isn't the Note though
Under the SGS2 vs Note thread I posted a picture of the screen size difference between the Note and iPhone. Yes, screen size is not everything, but when one compares this with all the other specs/facts the Note is a better product. The Note is glass + metal (unlike the S2) + plastic battery cover. Yes, battery cover ... can replace the battery and carry a spare if needed. The Note is as solid as the iPhone. I genuinely cannot appreciate the iPhone as currently offered. A more dramatic update was required. I'm not anti Apple. I love Apple products and have owned many ... and still do. I just feel that as things stand at present Apple is getting away with murder (and people queue up to be killed).

Specs on the note might be fantastic but not everyone has the balls to stick that piece of kit to his ear - sorry I will stick with the iPhone 4s which on a Vodacom iPhone contract is great value
You talking about presstick? Why would you want to use presstick to stick a phone to your ear?

If I had to go for an iPhone in this budget range I'd go for a TopUp option. On TopUp 400 you can get iPhone 4S 16GB for R514pm. If you then want, for example, 500MB pm that'll be R139.50pm leaving R260pm for calls (charged per second).

When I asked the Vodacom shops I called about that deal it didn't seem to be on anymore in that configuration. From what I could gather through the confusion the price went back to its normal level of R599, but the uncertainty around it made not include it in the end.

The price is definitely still R549 when you take it with an iPhone 4S. The contract can be taken separately (don't know why you would want to do that) and then the price is R595. But yes, unfortunately no-one at Vodacom is really aware of this. You have to keep phoning until you find someone who is aware of the deal. Best advice is to ask for a supervisor and tell them to phone you back once they have gone to confirm the price.

Depends on your usage pattern. Someone who knows they'll mostly do off-peak calls will get better value out of the TopUp option.

Even if ALL your calls are off-net in peak hours you'll still get 100 minutes, billed per second, out of the R260. Add in some on-net and off-peak calls and you'll easily get more value out of the TopUp 400 than the iPhone 120. Plus, if you have regular access to wifi (eg work / home) you'll be able to cut down on data usage and save even more that way too.
The TopUp 400s vs iPhone 120s contract is pretty much a wash. You can get about the same number of minutes and amount of data, but no text messages. Assuming an equal balance of calls you'll get around 150 minutes on the TopUp 400s. Plus R150 for 500Mb (according to Vodacom site and assuming they charge the contract price). But it'll cost another R57.50 for 100 text messages, assuming a balance between peak and off-peak (yes, many people use these).
So it would be a choice between something simple where you get your anytime and weekend minutes, plus data and texts every month or something where you have to decide on the balance.
Of course if Vodacom have changed how they do data, so it is easy to just buy some more whenever you need it, that would change the simplicity aspect. Same if you can now simply buy another SMS bundle when the current one runs out.

I see the tweet is also from December 2011. Perhaps it was a pre-order/launch special (explaining why Vodacom is no longer advertising it and why their store staff doesn't know anything about the deal)?
