Apple iPhone launched

As far as I know mixit is just a jabber client right? Seeing as the iPhone runs OS X and iChat is jabber enabled I dont see the problem?

The buttons, theres not buttons, unless it has voice recognition!!  :D

You're kidding right? :)

It's got a touch screen interface with various keyboard layouts. Numeric, QWERTY, T9 . . .

@Bwana, if its coming in June, it'll be running Leopard? Maybe with the superduper new speech recognition built in later?

Strange that they don't really mention if wireless sync will be the main way of connecting or if the dock connector will support FW.

With a stylus? Or your fingers?
Because if its anything like a LG Choc(should be an insult) its not going help one bit.

My argument is Im a Mxit fan, 90% of the youth out there are Mxit fans, they could also be Ipod fans, so they gonna have to choose. Might be hard.

I wonder if the Mxit guys have a Mac Mobile version of Mxit, will it just need some editing or could it not even be available.

AFAIK Apple havent tried to enter the mobile market, this will be there first so they have a lot to catch up on, But I also dont think Apple will disappoint.

All that is just speculation, so is most of this thread.:)

I'm sorry but how are you being locked into iTunes exactly? If you mean purely from a synching software front then which phone with PC synching capabilities does not have some proprietary offering along the synching front? Motorola's synching software is k@k, and if you don't have the cd anymore, you have to buy it... so what the problem is?

Nokia need no software to upload audio and images just for you bluetooth device to support file transfer.

As for syncing, you're right I know of nothing on the market (including the microsoft ones) that doesn't need something to sync.

So any truth in the iphone os x being "closed". I didn't get that impression. Imagine what this phone will do for news and blogging on the go.
Take picture, write comment, drop file on Transmit droplet, and BobJones is your uncle! Instant blog update... can you imagine the kinda things you can do using automator or a little applescript?

Check iphone on wikipedia...

Also check out http://apcmag.com/4965/top_10_things_to_hate_about_the_iphone , it appears it also won't sync on Wi-Fi or Bluetooth...

and if you're a supporter...

treo 650's are still on diplay at places like incredible connection for R6000. when will the madness and greed stop???!!! i have owned a couple of treos and have never paid over R3000 for them including shipping - buying from online suppliers abroad.

i will be on the iphone faster than you can say appleistheillest!!!

Why is this a sticky? Is there anything special about the phone that other phones can't already do? Or is it because it's Apple's first phone?

well the N91 doesn't need any nokia software to sync.

and even the yet to be released Nokia N-series phones are gonna come with a whopping 2gig - no competitive advantage there at all. What was jobs thinking.
erm... the N91 also comes in 4 and 8GB

Cingular is just a carrier - I doubt there's anything to prevent you simply buying one outright like you can with any other phone.

With 4 or 8gb storage I'm also not overly concerned expansion.

I wonder how long ICASA will take to approve it?
Boy was I wrong about that  Cingular has confirmed that consumers will have to take out a two year contract. http://crunchgear.com/2007/01/10/apple-iphone-faq/

I wonder if apple in their infinite wisdom (ok stupidity) is going to have local mandatory partnerships worldwide? Sorry but no phone is worth that.

No matter how lovely this looks, and all the gadgets that have been integrated, I still worry about battery capacity.

My ability to be in touch is more important than entertainment. Battery technology has come a long long way, but to really support a comms/entertainment device there is some way to go.

If I'm traveling I will listen to my iPod until it runs dry, but still want may phone to work; if its a long trip I can switch the phone off to communicate when I need to.

This may be just me and my preferences...

Cisco sues Apple over the iPhone name

According to ZDNet, cisco owns the name 'iPhone' and is filing a lawsuit against apple for copyright infringement.

http://blogs.zdnet.com/BTL/?p=4266&tag=nl.e589

It looks like Steve Jobs jumped the gun in sticking with the iPhone name, which is owned by Cisco. The two companies were in negotiation as Jobs took the stage on Tuesday to introduce his new mobile device, but didn't find a common ground…at least not soon enough. Cisco's final efforts to make a deal were apparently rebuffed or ignored by Jobs. The two companies had an idea to share the brand, to make clear their differentiation (which would be hard to do), to have their products interoperate, and to announce the deal by Macworld.

Maybe Apple will rename it to 'iMobile' or 'iCell' :D

Yeah I see Cisco is suing. And three weeks ago they released a VOIP phone called the iPhone. I know they're legally correct but they're being asses as well.

Really hope apple wins as I don't want to own something called a MacPhone.

The battery life specs don't mention standby time, but 5 hours talk-time seems about standard.
Charging arrangements should be similar to the ipod, dock connector to usb2 (and hopefully firewire) cable connected to a charger or your computer.

What I'd like to know is if there is a way to disable the phone portion while ur on a plane? The deals with the airlines to add ipod dock connectors to planes makes a lot of sense now - but its a bit of a waste if ur forbidden from turning on the device in the first place.

I hope that apple has enough clout with the FCC to get this sorted.
