Apple is taking its first steps towards a more comprehensive post-PC world

Hands up if you’ve heard of Swift Playgrounds? No, it’s not some new start-up providing quick playdates for bedraggled parents, although that might be interesting.

Swift Playgrounds is the new programming tool, introduced by Apple in June at its annual Worldwide Developer Conference, based on the Swift programming language the company introduced a few years ago.

so funny the people that didn't listen to my advice about the functionality of a tablet, then asked me if they can plug in a keyboard and mouse, then complained it doesn't perform as well as their laptop, now those that still use it, use it for an email or to check sport scores, others cant remember where they put it.

or, they miss the functionality of a notebook and start adding docks, stands, BT keyboard and mouse, iGlove, etc...

Unless you want to count the headless Microserver in my kitchen cupboard which I RDP to from my iPad once in a blue moon when required.

Have absolutely no use for a PC at home.

Now work on the other hand is a different story. But anyone using a tablet exclusively for work is either pretending to work or struggling very hard.

That being said this article completely misses the plot.

Swift Playgrounds is there to teach children and maybe super beginners the logic and methodology of coding in a fun and interactive way.

It's not meant to write actual applications with. It's more like a game than anything else and is a stepping stone to take it further and using an iMac or MacBook to do the real deal.

It's perfect for a tablet, if you understand what it actually does...which the article does not.


You would simply be making your life hard for no good reason if you wanted to actually develop apps end to end on iPads only.

Misleading title. This still won't give pads the functionality of pcs which is hardware based. Apple is doing everything they can to turn their pads into actual pcs. AMD and Intel are doing everything they can to cram the limits out of technology. Mobile isn't able to perform most common tasks and won't be with electronic tech.

I'll always have a pc. I hate phones & tablets. You simply cannot type on a tablet like you can on a PC with a keyboard so office & email related stuff is pc dedicated, i'd rather call someone than send a sms or whatsapp. As for gaming there is no chance.

Granted I realise I'm not average joe that loves forwarding facebook 'you'd never guess what happened next' crap.

Couldnt agree more.
I especially laugh at the price people pay for ****e limited featured tablets compared to laptops/PC's.
Just configured a R10K windows 10 tablet for a family member. It has an Atom processor.
One could get a much higher spec'd laptop at that price.

One only has to look a little at youTube in order to realize that tablets and phones will not give you a "full" internet experience.
