Apple Mac OS X Lion update is download-only: SA implications explained

When I have had to upgrade any of my PCs I had to sell the previous PCs, the motherboard and everything else was totally out of date. I guess that people who feel the need to upgrade their graphics cards and and RAM every few months would be using Macs anyway.
 
This whole saga just highlights our broadband problems. Glad I have uncapped ADSL ;) Personally I think it is a great move as it removes the only use I had for my optical drive. Now I just need a Mac without one :p

Or like buying a Brand New BMW and then saying you can't afford to buy a house.

Was told this, funny enough the guy uses a mac also.

as far as I know you can use one copy with up to 8 macs. maybe less. this is with the normal $30 upgrade!
 
Any guesstimates on time of launch? ;)

I'm guessing around the same time Apple usually do their keynotes and announcements, so 19:00-20:00ish our time.
 
Yeah downloading at the moment at R19 a gig from Axxess its costing R67 more that I would have paid last week when I was in the NI.. oh well life in the bush.
 
Just another example of the state of our Broadband, but also how software vendors take it for granted that everyone has great Broadband.
Time for Apple to show their hand and compromise.:p

How do you know how long it has to go? Mine just shows a Lion icon in the dock with a loading bar? and when you hover over the icon it just says 'downloading'?

It doesn't even give a percentage!
 
Click on 'Purchased' in the Mac App Store... You'll see a list of all the Apps you've purchased and their status on the right.
 
Bought my iMac on 9 June, so I qualify for a free upgrade, however the http://www.apple.com/za/macosx/uptodate/ page for all OTHER countries of course have links after the part where they say "Start by following one of the following links" !!! ... and the SA one of course also states to follow one of the following links and then NO LINKS ARE PROVIDED! You gotta love the incompetence in this country.

I was considering presenting some solutions to the cap-strapped Mac user, but it's a difficult question to answer without getting into specific scenarios.

You can download from a friend with uncapped, or get one of Afrihost's R1 steal accounts. If you're without ADSL you can pick up 8ta's 10GB for R199 promotion, provided you've got coverage and are happy to get locked into a 24 month contract. You could also get Cell C's 5GB package, but Lion will burn through the majority of the month's cap and you'll also have to pay for the cap for the rest of the package.

MTN's 1 Day "uncapped" package won't work as it's throttled to 128kbps after 150MB and it'll take more than 3 days by my calculations to download 4GB at that speed.
 
Apple will be releasing Lion on a USB stick for $69 soon. If you don't have the bandwidth - well Apple don't enforce copying of OS X at all. Lion has no serial number, no product activation, and no DRM of any kind. If you don't wanna pirate you can still buy Lion on the store and get a copy from your mate.
