Apple Macbook Air or Macbook Pro

You didn't buy from Incredible connection by any chance?

When I bought my 13" Air, it was sealed etc. But upon opening it, it had massive scratches on the outer lid.

I immediately took it back for a swapped one and opened the machine in front of them. Luckily this one was pristine. I don't know if they re-package demo units and sell them as new or what the story is.

Also, the fans spinning initially is normal. Spotlight indexes the entire hard drive when the first login occurs. It takes a bit of time, but after that it will be snappy.

My 13" air kicks my 2008 MacBook Pro 15" butt solidly. It's lovely machine and I do full time development on it.

I love my MBP (13" 2.7GHz i7 with 8gb ram and a 500gb Seagate momentus hybrid drive). I might keep the HDD add a SSD in a few months but we'll see what the prices are like. I edit thousands of photos on it a week and the screen might be a little smaller than I would like [if I wasn't carrying it everywhere] but it gets the job done.

I did indeed buy it from Incredible Connection. I must say there customer support has been great regarding exchanging the the macbooks ect. Does your macbook air get really hot tho? Mine got really hot on the bottom top left side. Im still very undecidedbetween the air and the pro. Love the look and feel of the air but the ssd size is a low point to me. So with that am leaning towards getting the pro again but like I mentioned still really undecided.

Did you let it finish the spotlight indexing before you decided to return it? I know you said you only transferred a little bit of data via time machine but it still takes a while to sort through your drive and that's when the system goes into overdrive.

Hehehehehe... Buyers paralysis. Take two Heineken and call me in the morning.

They do get hot, you can get Magician 'tho http://www.magicansoft.com/magican-monitor.html, it's a system monitor so you can keep an eye on things (like right now, my CPU is at 64ºC, my GPU is at 54ºC and my HDD is at 34ºC)

If you want hot try one of the first gen MBPs. You could iron a shirt with it! :eek:
 
My old 15" Macbook Pro got REALLY hot, the air not.

In fact, I'm running a VM right now, playing music, browsing and uploading a file via FTP with the air's lid closed and it's all dandy.

So do you ever have problems with the loud fan or any heat issues at all? Only ask this as I have a few friends who use the air for there everyday work machines and not once have they reported the problems I had. I am kind of leaning towards the Air again but I know I am going to regret the storage space down the line. My friends say they carry external HDD's with there music and videos ect so that could be a solution but then again the Air is for portability so if I am going to be carrying HDD's around I mite as well get the pro.

But for day to day usage it's whisper quiet.

Yes , well depends on your needs. I mostly dock at home with external drives for music / videos. I don't need those when I go out to clients.

Yeah that makes sense and is understandable if you are pushing the machine to its limits. I will mainly have it on my lap ect and when I am going to do more longers stints of work will have it setup at my desk connected to an external display, so pretty similar to your use.
 
Question, have you ever had an aluminium notebook before?

They all get warm, especially on your lap.

I bought a new Macbook Pro directly from Apple in the US and it had a small scratch on the case.

The fan came on after I opened up a browser (I don't have internet access but wanted to make sure the browser installed correctly) and then it would blow loud even when there was absolutely nothing open. I am sure I had a defected model as friends of mine who have over 20 13inch airs in their offices haven't heard of the problems I was facing at all.

I'm not sure you'd notice as much in an office environment.

Don't know about the Air, but the Pro can get quite hot when it's working hard. And it is hotter on the one side, even now.
 
My macbook is aluminum.... and if I set it to use the weaker GPU, then when not doing heavy processing, I can hardly tell it's on, it's so cool. Even when it's sitting on my bed.

However, powered USB devices seem to make it heat up quite significantly, especially USB modems. And it's not heat from the modem itself, because it also heats up when I use an extension cable.
 
I think McBook Pro is also better. Since I use it alot for videos and editing pictures I can't get enough of it!
 
If I had choice between the two I would go with the MacBook Pro but they really should increase the screen resolution.
 
The Macbook Air & Pro range hasn't been updated in ages, hey? Ivy Bridge is just around the corner, I think we will see significant updates soon.

Besides that, once you get used to the Air's size & weight, there's no going back.
