I want to buy a mbpr , but keep reading thread after thread of faults , bugs & defects , i have used mac's for 3 years at campus, i'm mostly going to be doing graphic work and photography, is getting a mac worth it ? image retention bugs with the automatic graphics switching bugs with the WiFi and Bluetooth while using magic mouse dead pixels numerous kernel panics freezing and crashing poor face time camera quality , hows the customer service with CORE ? any body had experience with them ? turnaround time for repairs ? and stuff like that , am i better off getting a cheaper machine with the same/similar specs. was thinking the lenovo Z580A its way cheaper for a quad core 2gb ram . . . . . , just wanted to ask for advice before spending a wad of cash . anybody own a mbpr that can comment ? also how is the skype video quality ? and Photoshop performance ,will be opening multiple large files
Thanks in advance
Have not used it for PS yet, but have run video encoding jobs on it and it's very fast. Much faster than 2010 MBP 15 2.6GHz Core i7 and MP 3 GHz quad core Xeon.
The image retention bugs are an issue with LG screens, not Samsung. It's possible to check using a script which one you have. Maybe you can then return the computer within 7 days for a refund, if you buy from Incredible or DigiCape. The screen has incredible contrast and resolution, and shows no banding so it must be at least an 8 bit display.
The Wifi BT issue is an issue with 2.4GHz Wifi networks and Magic Mouse. But if you use a different mouse, such as a wired Magic Mouse (which I prefer anyway) or any other wired mouse OR you use the 5GHz Wifi network, then you'll have no problems. Also likely, when you're using your Mouse for PS, you won't need the internet.
This machine is significantly lighter than the previous MBP 15. Its USB ports are on either side so no need to use an angulator or replicator/hub. Performance wise it's very fast.
The difference between MBP and rMBP is not big. It is also possible to buy a bigger SSD in the future and replace it yourself. Macsales.com sells an upgrade including the necessary screwdrivers. I plan on putting in a 1TB when OWC comes out with such an SSD size next year. (They actually have a 960GB SSD but in a different format.)
Only problem is that memory is not upgradable. Also if memory fails, well you have to replace whole logic board.
But memory did not fail in my previous MBP so I'm hopeful.
Re CORE. I don't know. Maybe if you buy from DigiCape you won't have issues. But then Digicape should also help you if you buy from Core too. I've purchased a Mac Pro and several iPods from Core and have not had problems with these devices during warranty so I can't say.
