Apple MacBook

I'm speaking for myself and all the NEW Mac converts, we don't need firewire and there are a wave of us, Apple in my opinion understand their market and have catered for us. The new users are esata and Wifi users btw and with USB3 on it's way we don't need firewire.
Do any of you new mac converts have a consumer grade camcorder? Many - including the canon I have - has FW which makes life a lot easier than trying to do it via USB even into something as lowly as iMovie - which is definitely not a pro app.

BTW - wrt sustained data transfers FW400 is faster than USB2 and FW800 puts them both to shame.
That's BS and you know it. If that was true, why did the white and black Macbooks (and iBook before that) all have FireWire. Dropping it is a cost-cutting exercise.
I think they were worried about it damaging MBP sales. People are looking at smaller lighter machines and there really isnt that much between the MB and the 15" MBP.

Well the macbook pro has firewire, many new non-mac laptops don't have firewire either only the high end ones, if firewire is so important then spend the extra cash and get the Pro, it's not the end of the world.

I think we're all aware of that by now and until the latest model of MB it used to be standard on that range too.

The extra cash isnt an insignificant amount now its it? A minimum of R5000 iirc.

And frankly who cares about non-mac laptops?

A minimum of R5000 is not bad, you'll get a bigger screen, better hardware etc. it's worth the blood, sweat and tears. I've got a macbook but with a 13" screen I don't consider it my main machine it's just there for everyday computing, if I was going to be working with camcorders then I'd get a Pro.

My mother likes editing her footage in iMovie - fortunately with her previous generation MB she can.

Just because you can't see the need for FW on the MB doesnt mean it isnt there. ;)

Well if Apple want people to fork out more for firewire so be it, I think there are more macbook users who don't need firewire than those who use it these days and Apple have adapted but also(as expected) frustrated some long time users.

Plus 1

Okay fine... I admit defeat... My argument was unfounded.. Why apple would leave out Firewire 400 from the 17" MacBook Pro is just plain stupid... and here's me thinking they actually put some considered thought into removing FireWire from the MacBook...

*walks away in shame...

I would have thought that's less of an issue. FW800 is compatible with FW400, and you can daisy-chain devices, so you could get by with just one port.

Although I agree, having two FW ports would have been nice.

Can certainly agree with that.
