One major difference: the Apple SIM is remotely switchable between networks.
 
This is pretty much inevitable. No SIM = slimmer device or more space for battery.
 
How will it work when visiting different countries? I want to be able to remove a sim and put in a local sim to avoid roaming charges.
 
Heheheh... soon Apple will require all consumers using Apple devices be fitted with an Apple authorising transponder beneath the skin that will facilitate permission for said device to be used at all. Failure to comply will result in all Apple devices and hardware being inoperable to the consumer. Transponder installation will complete the Apple experience as envisaged by the Cupertino company. It will also monitor the fluctuation in biometric response when an Apple device is handled and may at times amplify immediate gratification transmitters if the consumer's own response is not within the desired Apple distortion field parameters.

Not sure what you mean, I know the kindle didn't require any config and apparently it talks directly to a amazon apn setup in a region/country. Bought mine direct so it would be the same as any device in the states etc.

As long as browsing and shopping is free on the device, I'm happy and couldn't care less but I do think apple is patenting the obvious again.
