Apple Pay

So was at Vida e Cafe.... in Durban, Morningside- Florida Road.
And there was a guy testing Samsung Pay and Apple Pay. This was 2 weeks ago!!!

They were very hush hush...and took photos of the POS Machine, and receipt. As well as giving us a free coffee for the delay!

Delay being..... in SA we have Zapper. SnapScan. Discovery health free vouchers. Vida’s built in voucher app. All this confusion.... the poor guys behind the counter couldn’t believe that they just tapped the card machine (which wasn’t tap and go... this was the Samsung device- seems to work without tap and go) and the transaction was approved.

Are you absolutely sure it was in fact Apple Pay?

FNB App now supports NFC on non-Apple smartwatches. Could very well have been that.

That does sound like Samsung Pay because the Samsung devices use Magnetic Secure Transmission meaning you can use it at basically any card machine even if it's not NFC enabled.

I don't know about Apple Pay but the last I heard Samsung Pay was scheduled for Q3 this year.

It's probably just NFC pay with FNB Pay.

Most of the credit card machines are being software updated for nfc payment over the last few months. But uptake is slow as some merchants want a higher monthly fee to enable it.

It's silly that FNB can't get Apple to approve them, what FNB are doing for their Android Pay is the same VSTS needed by Apple Pay.

These are the guys listed on FNB where you can do Android tap and pay, and Vida is listed there. So what you saw was then probably giving them an upgraded card machine.

I wish we got Apple Pay.

It will be a while for retailers to catch on even if the service comes to South Africa. Because Apple Pay terminals are Apple propiotary devices. And knowing Apple, they cost Apple prices too :p

No they aren't. Any compatible terminal will do, ApplePay works with any contactless terminal in the UK (and US where I've tried it). I'm also pretty sure there's no such thing as an Apple terminal...

If you see the contactless logo it will work.

Even the cheap portable card terminals can do ApplePay.

Apple Pay is just Visa Tokenization Service, Mastercard have their own version too

FNB Pay on Android does exactly this. Apple has very little to do with the actual implementation besides naming it as theirs.

I stand corrected then. But I'm sure they will take a cut in a form of commission or royalties or whatever.

I've been using Apple Pay for the last few days and it's definitely something I'd like to see introduced in SA.
