Apple reclaims smartphone crown

Despite Apple’s late year sales spike, Samsung still sold the most smartphones in 2011, shipping a total of 94 million, compared to Apple’s 93.2 million, the report said.

And Android outsold iOS 48% to 42%.

Still, a very good performance by the iPhone during Q4.

One thing that makes me go ??? each time I read stuff like this is one simple fact:

Apple *makes* their own phone AND own OS, whereas Android just jumps on whatever phone they're put on (be it Samsung/LG/HTC or whatever). Sure you could argue Google also made their own phone, and I would love to see an Apple vs Apple (lol, puns) comparison of the Google Phone + Google OS sales vs Apple Phone and Apple OS sales.

G a a a p .... stretching .... whatever ...

Those keeping their eyes on these matters know that the release of many other devices (especially Android) were held back not to clash with the iPhone 4s. One must look at this over a longer period. When ICS and the new Droids hit the streets things will change for sure.

I dont think you can ever get that not as long as Android have choices. Reason for saying this is that iPhone has no alternatives if you want iOS you can only get it in one shape/form factor.

Android on the other had has all kinds of shapes and builds, so in my case I Like Android but dont like Plastic phones so will look at a RAZR but one with loads of batter power ie: RAZR MAXX. Someone else might like a huge screen like the Note and someone else might like the gaming buttons of the Xperia Play.

So in essence we all like Android but just have an option in what container its in.

Agreed as we saw with all the Models announced at CES at the start of this year.
