I think it is the other way around. Its because they approve stupid patents like this that patent trolls exist.

I mean what have they really invented here? Nothing, all they did was move the antenna to a different place. I'm gonna patent putting the antenna 2 cm from the top right corner of the screen, if anyone violates this absurd patent BAM! I nail them for millions. Then I'll patent steak knives with exactly 66 serrations, then WHAM! I can retire. I used to wonder how in the hell tech companies get thousands of patents a year, now I know.

Note: Software patents are stupid, period. Unless its true AI, otherwise GTFO.

To put the whole patent system in light all you have to do is look at the numbers.

In the last 5 years they awarded 1 million software patents, the entire database of 2.1 million software patents is 80 years old. 30% of them are duplicates, and if you write any program you have a 95% chance of infringing on someone's patent.

You want to tell me in the last 5 years they innovated more than the pioneers did in the 1st 70+ years?

Even a laptop is a pretty obvious progression.

Correct that there are now so many dumb patents you need a box full of them yourself purely for self-defence. But their misuse is not only those who only hold patents to extort money, but the likes of Apple who use them as a means to try to put their competitors out of business.
