Apple says the next version of its software for the iPhone and iPad won't come with a pre-installed YouTube application.

Users will be able to play YouTube videos in the Web browser, says Apple spokeswoman Trudy Muller. Google Inc., which owns YouTube, is also working on a downloadable app, she says.

Muller says Apple Inc.'s license to include the YouTube app has expired, but did not explain why it hasn't been extended.

Google says it's working with Apple to ensure a quality YouTube experience.

Google has its own operating system for smartphones that compete with the iPhone. Apple has sued companies that use it, saying it copies features from the iPhone. In June, Apple said the next version of its operating system will replace Google Maps with an Apple app.

Surely only an apple fan would stick through all of this? Maps gone, Youtube "gone". What next?

Hate watching YouTube videos on Safari. Will probably find something on Cydia though.

Not too bothered by losing Google Maps.

I'm not sure you understand - the only thing "gone" are the dedicated google apps. Maps will be still be there - both as a dedicated app as well as google maps via a browser - and youtube videos will also be available via a browser (which many will tell you is a better way to view them anyway).

Oh, too late.

^ This. So you'll have to download the app from the app store... No doubt Apple apologist accusations will follow but how is this really a problem for iPhone users?
PS. I'm actually looking forward to Apple Maps... TomTom is in the mix on the development and it's the best turn-by-turn navigation app on a phone IMO.

OMG! Doomed!

Google maps gone - replaced by TomTom. WIN!

I watch youtube videos using browser in desktop mode anyhow otherwise you lose "watch later" functionality. No youtube app = No loss.

Google will release apps for both their products.
I believe Apple is doing Google a favour. Google with release a YouTube app with ads built in - thus potentially increasing their revenue.

The apple tree is getting smaller by the day.... Yes there will be a Google app, so at the end of the day google +1, apple 0 ... The U.S love Youtube, nothing to compete with it. No way in hell a Apple user would accept not having it!

You fanboys are so blind! Who says there'll no youtube on apple devices because of dropping the app?

The pre-installed app was horrible. Viewing in Safari or the countless 3rd party apps is much better.

Safari always takes me to mobile YouTube, which i suppose is expected. Preferred the app, why don't people like it? Haven't tried any of the 3rd party.

If you read my post properly, you see I mention google will make an app available ... jee... blind much? Nothing to do with fanboi crap. Merely stating no way in hell Apple would deny their users Youtube... it will be there one way or another... Just now its going to be an official google app for apple +1 for google...

The official youtube app is going for a steal at $10 in the iStore. Get them now before they sell out.

You're showing a lack of comprehension of what's happening.

I'm happy about this, the app had basically never been updated and lacked functionality like voting on comments or showing the top comment. The web page works great, and now Google can make their own Youtube app, which can be updated more frequently.

Exactly. This only seems to be an issue for the fandroids.

That's exactly what is happening, this is in every way a good thing. Apple is giving google more control.
