Hi everyone,
I just want to clarify something. Is it possible to connect an external hard drive to an apple tv 2 when it is jailbroken??? I have scoured the internet and have seen many mixed articles where some say its possible and others say not possible. Could someone who either has an apple tv 2 or knows if this is possible please let me know and what limitations there are if any and how they got it to work. Thanks for the advice.

1st Gen ATV could -- for example: JB and then install fire core package : http://support.firecore.com/entries/259297-using-an-external-usb-drive-for-storage

It appears the 2nd gen can only connect to iTunes or NAS drive. http://support.firecore.com/entries/20322512-connecting-to-a-mac-pc-or-nas-drive

Btw if you have either a router or something like an Apple airport extreme(wifi) unit; it should be easy to setup a NAS i.e. your laptop will be free to move around without affecting your ATV experience.

Thanks for the links. I am trying to find a link I had earlier where someone said it is possible to connect via a USB cable. But I think what I am going to do is just keep the external drive connected to the iMac and then make the apple tv read the files from there - that should work without problems right?

Yes, it should work. Just remember that your Mac will have to be running ALL the time. The greenies might not like you for that.

Will work just fine; here's some details on how to split your content https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2738533?start=0&tstart=0

Hi weelzSA,

I have connected a NAS to my aTV2 through my router and it works really well. The link that [)roi(] supplied to firecore is great. That's what I have used and I am very happy!

Let me know if you have any questions.

Sorry I can't add to the USB part of your question as I had planned to use a NAS from the start.

Hi CahrlC - Just wanted to find out what NAS you are running and if you know of places I can purchase one as I have been looking but can't find too many? The Apple TV is running perfect connected to my mac but it just irritating how I have to make sure the MAC is always on ect (it is on most of the times tho) but trying to look for a better solution and I think a NAS is the solution. Please could you let me know. Thanks.

Without a JB your ATV2 you cannot access a NAS directly, only via an existing iTunes on a Mac.

Firecore's solution, http://firecore.com/atvflash-black allows you to access any NAS and also to play most formats without conversion. You will find a lot more help on their forums if this is what you want,

If you have for example and airport extreme or time capsule, both can be used as a NAS (after the firecore JB) & I'm sure you could also find many far more reasonably price alternatives.

Hi WeelzSA,

I use a Western Digital MyBook Live. I'm sure if you do a search on them you will be able to find it somewhere. I got it through a contact who has a dealership at Frontosa.

Good luck and trust me... It's worth it!

Thanks for this thread, anyone know where you can source these ATV2s in Jhb?

I know I've seen it on Expansys.co.za. They sell it. but just know you are paying a high price if you buy it in SA. You will save yourself alot of money if you get someone to pick one up for you in the states.

I bought one off eBay, brand new and sealed and recieved within 7 days after paying. Total was R1300 including shipping and full customs and tax so worked out cheaper still than buying from an online store in South Africa.

Hi there. Id like to do the same, was it a Buyout post on eBay or an Auction? If it was a buyout could you please send me a PM with the link to the one you used to be sure to get a legit item :)
