Hello all,

New TV in the bedroom, so I pulled out my old ATV2, which I haven't used in ages.

It is JBn, using Firecore, and so has Kodi etc installed.

The above was nice for when I was still on a US account, but since moving over to the ZA store, I'm contemplating a Showmax or local Netflix account.

It's currently running OS 5.3 (6105).

Thing is, I'm struggling to sign into my Apple account, and I suspect that 2-factor authentication is the problem. When I start entering my password, I get the popup verification code on my iPhone, but there's no place to input it on the ATV, probably since the iOS needs to be updated.

An option would be to simply turn off 2FA until I've signed in - but I'm also wondering if Kodi etc is worth it?

Were I to restore the ATV2 to factory settings, would I be able to run Showmax/Plex etc. on it, or do those only work on ATV3/4s??

If you were in Johannesburg I would swap you my atv3 or you could do that in Cape Town. Some people would value it more.

I've managed to get access to my DAS c/o Infuse, and did a clean install of Kodi. The latter is not as stable as I'd like, possibly due to the ATV2 being a bit long in the tooth, but will give it some time.

So no major reason just yet to sign into iTunes.

That said, anyone know if Plex and Showmax needs an ATV4 to run, or can it be installed on a clean ATV2?

I am in the exact same boat as you. I had my ATV2 jailbroken and had plex and kodi installed. It was then put away for a few years and I decided to dust it off and use again this year, so I cleaned it out and restored back to factory default. Then I put it away again.

Now I want to use it in my bedroom and if I can get Kodi and Plex running on it again it will be first prize.

Just to close this loop. Managed to get Kodi up and running.

Still bombs out into reset occasionally, if I try and move too quickly - think the 128kb [ ;) ] RAM in the ATV2 gets easily overwhelmed - smooth and steady does the trick.

Using Infuse instead of Plex (not available on 5.3) to watch things off my DAS (connected to my Mac Mini) - and installed Couch Surfer Pro to get web access, should I ever need it. Still trying to work out how to watch Youtube through the browser, since Flash is a no-go.

Disabled 2FA, and then managed to sign in to iTunes for the option of renting/buying movies. Sharing my iTunes library from the Mini, so music is available as well. All in all - barring the occasional reset, works well enough.

In the process of installing high(er) speed internet, so if it pans out as expected - and the speed allows for it - for Showmax/Netflix to become viable, might consider going for a ATV4, and moving the ATV2 to the spare bedroom.
