Nope. What functionality were you hoping to fix via a JB?

Nope it can't.

However you can use PlexConnect with a bit of a hack which might get you where you need to be.

was looking at streaming some of the sports sites that were posted in another thread.

SauRoNZA mentioned the solution: PlexConnect used together with a PlexServer will fulfill most of your requirements.

Basically quite a bit can be achieved without a JB

https://github.com/iBaa/PlexConnect
http://www.plexapp.com

Avoid plexconnect.org -- Plex solutions are free!

Basically you set up a PlexServer with the plugins you want, then confirm it's working on your computer. Next step is to set up PlexConnect on the computer and change the DNS settings on your Apple TV to point to the Computer running PlexConnect. You then go to the trailers app on your Apple TV to access Plex, ...

thanks! I tried this a couple weeks ago with no luck, but i'll try again.

will this allow me to get to the websites that stream the sports?

hmmm,, was just thinking about something. I have access to my parents cable account in the states, so I can watch HBO, ESPN and the other apps but I have to use Unotelly for the DNS. by changing the dns for plex connect, it seems that I won't be able to use those apps on the Apple TV. so I guess I will have to make a habbit of changing the DNS?

Nope, much simpler than that, just change the DNS setting on the computer to use Unotelly.

The ATV uses the Computer for all it's DNS lookups, and the Computer redirects all it's requests via Unotelly --> which means there will be no problem to use Netflix, Hulu+, HBO, ... from your ATV, on top of the PlexConnect stuff.

A more complex alternative would be to host your own fully fledged DNS server, which will provide you with greater control over DNS routing --> redirecting everything to Unotelly or Google DNS servers impacts any benefits that could be derived from the Akamai network.

Sites like ESPN, HBO, ... require cable subscription validation; so the answer is typically no; but if you have family / friends with a cable subscription and they're willing to share the details, then yes it's possible with Unotelly, and you most probably would not even need PlexConnect.

Plex however does provide a multitude of other media sources that are not available on the base ATV so you might still want to check it out.

Dude, you are really awesome. Got it working....but....hulu now gives me geo restriction errors. Didnt try hbo yet, not stressed as we usually watch the shows on our ipad from bed.

Note the my PC does have my unotelly dns address but something tells me that plexconnect has dns settings in it as well. Will play with it later.

Again, thank you so much, i owe you some JD :)

No worries Bud, forums are cool for just that.

Re Hulu+ --> biggest issue is usually the monthly subscription as they only allow payments from a payment source verified to be within the US, other than that you'll also need Unotelly.

However I rather recommend you get the standard Hulu (same one as their website) working on your computer together with Plex.

For Hulu Desktop; recommend running it from a computer that is HDMI or VGA wired to a TV -- mac minis are great for this re built in HDMI & Infrared receiver (avoids keyboard & mouse)

If you want set up a shared TV signal across multiple rooms, then I'd suggest that you think about using ATVs with Plexconnect, together with a TV signal product like Elgato (which btw has a Plex plugin) to stream the shared signal to all rooms -- FYI I currently cover 6 rooms this way (DSTV, etc... all without the need for any TV cabling)

Do you mind explaining in detail how you went about setting this up? I have 3 Apple TV's and DSTV and wouldn't mind having DSTV in all the rooms that have Apple TV's.

You need:
A working Plex server - http://www.plexapp.com/getplex/
An Elgato EyeTV; pick one (link up with a feed from your DSTV decoder) - http://www.elgato.com/en/eyetv

You then add / setup:
Plex EyeContact plugin - http://wiki.plexapp.com/index.php/EyeContact
PlexConnect - https://github.com/iBaa/PlexConnect

Once all these bits are finally setup and configured, you then configure your ATVs DNS to point to the PlexConnect computer (I used 1 Mac Mini for everything)

Btw Plex Eyecontact must be setup using the IP address of the EyeTV.

You then access the live TV stream (a channel) in the trailers app on the ATV.

Channels are listed as not being fully supported by the current versions PlexConnect (work in progress), but for me at least, it's worked quite well.

Thanks for this. I really appreciate it. :) I'll give it a shot as soon as I buy one of those Elgato Eye's.

ok, so to get Hulu Plus working, i went into the plexconnect.cfg file (edited with notepad) and changed the dns server to Unotelly's DNS. works like a charm now :)

again, thanks roi!

Edit - you can get hulu to take your credit card by just clicking on the submit / accept a couple of times.
