Yesterday I purchased the Apple TV 4th Generation and was quite disappointed when I realised that it does not have a separate audio out like the 3rd Gen (optical audio).

Needless to say, I am happy overall with the product. My question though:

The device sends its audio via HDMI. So I connected the device's HDMI into my amp as I would with any other HDMI device. What is strange is that I cannot seem to get the audio through the Sony AMP. It only plays the audio via the tv and bypass the amp completely.

I have tried several settings on the amp but cannot seem to get the audio to be forced through the amp instead of the HDMI TV out via the amp.

Anyone with suggestions?

This is the unit I have >>>

I'm just guessing but shouldn't this be handled via the TV? Like, connect the amp to the TV and set the TV audio to the amp first?

I have a similar amp and apple tv arriving today, hoping I don't have any issues as well.

Maybe read this forum - http://forums.macrumors.com/forums/apple-tv-and-home-theater.100/

Oh f*** it's got no USB port for external storage?

The apple doesn't fall far from the IPhone :)
The USB-C port is only for diagnostic purposes.
Now it doesn't look like an interesting device anymore.
Thanks for noticing it, think you saved a lot a people buying it and only noticing afterwards, since a USB port is something people take as a given.

Can't remember if the 3rdGen ATV has a usable USB port either - Apple products tend not to - they want you to stream.

To be fair, it is, like the Roku and others, primarily designed for streaming (whether locally or via the Web). My Roku has a USB port that I can hook an external drive to but I haven't used it once in 2 years - everything is streamed via the Web or local network.

Yes people 5 years ago took it as a given. Today that approach is positively archaic. I had a media player with a 2tb in it until recently, then got a Chromecast and moved the drive inside the PC and set it all up on Plex. You can't even compare.

The first generation of Sony amps with HDMI did not support HDMI surround sound capabilities. The HDMI was merely a pass through to the TV. I have an amp almost similar to yours.

You didn't do your homework first :wtf:

So 1080 with no optical and a non functional USB?

Has a cool remote though !

Definitely just a pass through - I checked with Sony as well. Oh well, I am not going to change my sound system just for an Apple TV.

Lesson learnt - and an expensive one too...

I'm not sure why they never included an optical tbh.

I like to reroute my movie sound via HDMI and my music via optical to a separate DAC.
