It's finally available today, so I guess time for the comments to come rolling in.

A very cheeky 7-day trial only, but then a very modest (SA) price of R84.99.

Will only get to check it out this evening.

Seems the first episode of every show is free regardless of using the trial or not.

I'm not convinced their own content alone is enough to justify cost tbh. The only channel we get in Sa it seems is the Apple Tv+ and Smithsonian.. bleh.

1st 2 episodes free for 2 series morning show and for all man kind. They only have 3 episodes per series and release new one weekly . Interesting review here

Unless you’ve recently bought an Apple device. Then...

Yes...but that "free" is attached to very far from free.

it's like that "free" coffee when your car goes for a service. :)

In what way?

I bought an Apple TV to serve as a media box and now I have a couple of shows to watch without paying. “See” isn’t too bad although I have only watched three episodes. Seems free enough for my pocket

No man it’s just a joke.

The “free” required a 15000+ purchase so it’s very far from free.

Same way the coffee isn’t really free if you paid R5000 for the service.

It’s just the cost of doing business.

But if you do use it then it’s a nice R1119 discount I guess.

OK. Luckily ATV is relatively inexpensive :-)

Chromecast was acting up so finally decided just to get an Apple TV and got a free year as well. Not that I've seen anything making the subscription worthwhile yet...

But I'll see it as a R1000 discount on the TV and feel better about the damage done to my credit card. :whistling:

On a note slightly off topic, I think Apple allowing their service to be used on other devices is a good move.

I think they're catching people who would never have signed up

I wonder how much Apple paid to have their app sent to my Rokus.

Roku get paid a commission for all sign ups and Apple pay them for their ad campaign to have it on their channel spotlight and on the add banners on right hand side of roku .

Minimum ad campaign with roku is around $75000 per week

Add banner? It was added, without any intervention from myself.

Or was that ad, as in advertisement?

I checked their rate card for one of my channels and if you pay the right amount for their advertising campaign they will auto install channel.

Apple TV+ gets high marks for 4K video quality

Apple TV+ is getting plaudits for the quality of its 4K video streaming from FlatpanelsHD editor in chief Rasmus Larsen. In a recent forum post. Larsen said that Apple TV+ has the highest 4K streaming quality they’ve seen in any service to date.

They measured the bitrates produced by streaming 4K versions of See, The Elephant Queen, Snoopy In Space, and Dickinson.

"It’s worth pointing out that Apple TV+ uses variable bitrate with a quite wide span from low to top, so the console must run for some time to calculate the average bitrate."

Apple TV+ praised for its high bitrate streaming video quality

Whatever you think of the material on offer, you can’t really deny that Apple TV+ shows look amazing. With most TV+ content offering 4K HDR video and Dolby Atmos sound, Apple is flexing its CDN muscles with its new streaming service.

In a forum post, FlatpanelsHD editor-in-chief Rasmus Larsen has now put some numbers to the claims.

Rasmus Larsen writes that TV+ shows have the highest streaming quality for 4K out of all the services on the market at the moment, and eclipses most iTunes movies in bit rates.

Apple TV+ drama SEE hit highs of 41 Mbps with an average bitrate of 29 Mbps when streaming using an Apple TV 4K. Even the Snoopy cartoon recorded a 13Mbps average, which is high given it is a 2D cartoon with a relatively limited color palette.

This is about half the size of a Hollywood movie recorded on UHD Bluray media. Blurays have always offered the best quality and lowest compression but the stats for Apple TV+ really are impressive for a streaming service.

Hopefully this means that Netflix will step up to the plate...
