Apple tv

Given the broadband limitations in SA, is it even worth it getting Apple TV in SA?

why can't there just be a store you can walk in to get it? :P

Core (SA Apple distributors) don't bring it in - Apple only officially sells the Apple TV to countries with the full iTunes store.

try the Xtreamer media player range from scoop.co.za in Montague Gardens, Cape Town. i bought the iXtreamer, which can house your iPod/iPhone or iPad, Full HD HDMI, plays all the music or movie files i throw at it, even blu-ray movies i rip on my hard drive, the AppleTV 2 plays most audio files, but will ONLY play movie files converted for iTunes in .m4v format. you can add a hard drive inside the Xtreamer or via USB, i stream all my movie and music files from my Macbook Pro to the Xtreamer via my Billion Router using Cat6 cable, it could not have been any easier, i had the 2008 AppleTV and was very pisses off with compatibility issues, hope this help you, if you decide to buy gimme a shout and i'll gladly help you set it up, e-mail is [email protected]

I just want one, but most of these sites look dodgy :P

yeah getting an appletv for media centre purposes is weak - rather get a media player than can actually play Video files like avi's and divx/mkv/etc.

Well it looks nice, it's really small, relatively cheap and has good networking ability. I love how super simple it is and how super complicated all other devices are in comparison, e.g. the remote.

You can jailbreak it and install XBMC to play all formats, although I don't know how well that works. For watching legal stuff on iTunes it's perfect if you're into that.

Is there any point to getting the apple tv hardware if there isn't a .co.za option for getting content? Can it be used with any other tv on demand service in South Africa?

No. It can really only be used with the iTunes store, and you have to get a US or UK account too.

Look, you won't get Netflix or anything like that. They won't even show up on the menu (Unless you have a US iTunes account, hint, hint). But All my DVDs are now stored in the wendy house. When I want to see one of my movies, I just stream them to AppleTV from my iMac. Just keep in mind that iTunes must be running ALL the time. Rebooting your mac (or PC with iTunes) and having iTunes shutting down will result in howls of protest from the living room.

Listening to podcasts from your TV? Done.

Watching iTunesU lectures on your TV? Done.

Slideshow of your photos? Done. I use this one much more than I expected.

Playing all of your music collection on your TV? Done.

Yes, an Apple TV is definitely worth it.

i suppose for lightweight stuff you do the AppleTV would suffice. i ripped all my Blu-Ray movies in FullHD 1080P no compression, streamed to my iXtreamer or my Samsung Blu-Ray Player, with no stuttering.i am in favor of the Appletv but like i said its a little under power for what i do. i have XMBC and Plex on my HDMI Mac Mini, and the Mini even plays the blu-ray movies with no stuttering, only problem theres no HD Audio codec for Mac,so i get DTS 5.1 core audio instead of DTS-HD MA, but thats where the Xtreamer comes in handy.
