Apple unveils upgraded Apple TV

Apple unveiled an upgraded Apple TV set-top box with a faster processor and revamped remote control, giving its living room strategy a boost as Amazon.com, Google and Roku continue to launch competing devices.

The A12 Bionic chip in the new Apple TV device is an upgrade over the A10 processor in the previous model.
 
I've been meaning to replace my apple HD with a 4k version ever since I got my OLED TV so that I don't need to use the webos version of apps (not bad at all but I bought the TV for the TV not the smarts ). As the new one supports 4k , HDR etc - it's a no brainer for me.

As much I would not buy a Apple iphone - the AppleTV is second to none in my limited experience.

I have both a Apple TV and Firestick , of the same age that are switched on 24/7 and the Firestick is showing its age whereas the AppleTV is still running as if its the first day I turned it on 5 years ago.

yeah... I was expecting *at least* the A13 chip for the time-gap difference and future-proofing but ok, the optimised nature of it still supersedes all other media boxes. The remote is definitely a much better step up (but backwards compatible anyway) and newer I/O standards does help, the rest just needs to be sorted out by software, like the native 24.000 fps handling that was introduced in tvOS 14.5 etc., definitely agree with you.
 
The only saving grace I reckon is that the price hasn’t changed... I wonder if I’m being silly but AppleTv with an M1 equiv may kill the gaming console market?

I guess the need isn’t there just yet.. but hrm.. wouldn’t be surprised if they do this in the future when a 2nd gen comes out?

But again it may result in a diluted environment.. ie iPad vs MacBook Air showdown. Still.. that would be an awesome all in one automation box for home.

It won’t crack.. though will dent and bend.

Silicon cover will be needed. I wonder if this one has a button battery or recharge like the glass one. Also the cost of this to buy separately.
 
The remote looks old.

Apple lost the plot this year with design.

The imac looks like a knock off, and the Apple TV looks bulky with a 90s remote.
 
I still have my “old” generation Apple TV’s in my house. They work fine and I dont see the need to upgrade
 
Tempted but ATV4 still going strong.
When current tv finally gives out I'll get 4k box.
