The price of the 27-inch Quad iMac is only $1999 (about R15000) - now lets see how we get ripped off here in South Africa

Apple announced a slate of new computers and peripherals Tuesday, a day after it posted strong quarterly results and two days before Microsoft launched a new operating system Windows 7.

The new computers include upgraded iMacs, a new white Macbook and improved Mac Minis. Apple also launched a new mouse called Magic Mouse that features support for Apple's multi-touch control system first introduced on the company's iPhones and since incorporated into the trackpads built into Apple computers.

According to Apple, the 69- dollar device will be included free with all new computers and connects via Bluetooth.

The new iMacs include a 27-inch (68.5-centimetre) and a 21.5-inch (55-centimetre) model, both of which boast faster processors and graphics chips. The Mac Mini also gets faster processors, while the entry-level Macbook boasts more power and a changed exterior design.

Apple announced a 47-per-cent jump in profits on Monday as consumers kept purchasing the company's computers and handheld devices despite the recession.

Microsoft, whose operating systems still run over 90 per cent of the world' s personal computers, plans to launch Windows 7 on Thursday, just three years after it introduced the widely-panned Windows Vista.

The 27 inch iMac is supposedly for people who'd have bought Mac Pros possibly, but probably for DTP and picture/graphic creation/editing and photo editing. The iMac can't handle expansion cards such as the numerous video capture/h264 encoding and video effects rendering cards.

Add a backlit 27" monitor to the price of you hackintosh and see how it compares. Even then it still wont be anywhere near as pretty :p
