Apple Watch thread

I'm itching to get my hands on an Apple Watch but I will wait for the technology to mature and for casing to get slimmer.

If you look at all the other sports/fitness/sports combo watches out there, some of which are "dumb" and some which have smart features, they are all pretty massive compared to the AW.

I think the tech will continue to mature/improve rapidly with every upgrade cycle introducing better battery life and features. AW2 is the best of the lot, but yes could be even snappier and a tad slimmer.

Not that it phases me - ocean / pool swims with GPS, runs, bluetooth, heartrate data, etc - it works 100% for what I need and then some.

Very pleased with the purchase - getting good mileage out of it.

My wife and I recently bought ourselves the Apple Watch Original with the silicone sport band. It is around 2 weeks old but the coating on the bands are rubbing off. Has anyone else experienced this and can anything be done regarding it ie getting a new band at the iStore?

Did you buy them at the iStores?

Have the silicon/sport bands as well - not sure what coating could be rubbed off it? First I've heard of something like that - but yes, if you bought from them, take it back there, and have them look at it.

Yes, I bought them at the iStore. I have read online that it was an issue with some bands
Here is a pic:

The watch in the pic is not mine personally but its just to give you an idea what it looks like

We have the Original Apple Watch and have read there were some issues with these bands.

I have the original AW with silicone band, using it for a year now and no issues with the coating on the band.

Also have the original series, have two "genuine" silicon straps and one "generic" one bought off ebay...daily use...no issues whatsoever. Would also recommend taking it back to the store.

Been swimming with mine since October last year, lots of ocean swim training and indoor pool training in chlorine.

Always rinse afterwards, but zero strap issues with my Nike+ sport strap.

I'm on a big Apple Watch mission again, I'm pondering whether to go for a Series 1 or 2.
I don't really need the GPS in the 2 and I don't really need the extra waterproof qualities, but I'm thinking in the long term Apple might support the 2 for longer than the 1 in terms of software updates etc.
Also, do you use any screen protection on your Apple watch?

I understand your concern...however, I feel that they support older devices for a decent time - support for the iPhone 4S only ended last year (because iOS 10 is only compatible with the 5 and upwards) - that was 5 years of support for the 4S (to use it as an example and illustrate my point).

Although the series 2 has the better GPU on the chip, as well as the GPS, etc, I think the performance of the improved chip in the series 1 is decent and close enough to the one in the series 2, to be "futureproof" for a decent time to come. At this stage, only "series 0" owners like myself need to worry, and I reckon we would still be able to survive a future software update or two.

The R1,700 difference in price between the series 1 and 2, is a lot of money as well. IMHO, the series 1 is excellent value for money, if you don't need the GPS and waterproofing.

I ordered a proper transparent cover that fit over the screen, bought it off ebay for R20, including postage! Had to wait 6 weeks for it to arrive, though. Wasn't prepared to pay R350 in iStore for the same thing, and the china malls and flea markets don't seem to cater for the Watch, as opposed to covers for iPhones and iPads...think you will find cheaper alternatives on Takealot and Bid or Buy nowadays.

I do feel some sort of screen protection is necessary. I've bumped my Watch quite a few times against a wall or door frame, etc. and every time I was so glad I had the cover on. The cover itself fits nice and snug, and doesn't really make the watch appear bulkier or anything, so definitely worth it.

I use no protection on my Apple Watch S2 - it's a beater, really, for whenever I want to track something rather than wearing one of my Swiss watches.

Considering it will be obsolete in a few years, anyway, who cares about a few scratches?

Watch OS 3.2 was released this evening as well.

Apple is now rolling out watchOS 3.2 for Apple Watch. watchOS 3.2 includes Theater Mode which disables raise-to-wake and mutes alerts.

Apple is also introducing SiriKit to Apple Watch with watchOS 3.2. SiriKit lets developers integrate their apps with Siri for select uses. Prior to watchOS 3.2, SiriKit was limited to iOS apps.

As for Theater Mode, this is how Apple describes the new feature:

Theater Mode lets users quickly mute the sound on their Apple Watch and avoid waking the screen on wrist raise. Users still receive notifications (including haptics) while in Theater Mode, which they can view by tapping the screen or pressing the Digital Crown.

I'm a huge Apple fan, but even I have to laugh at some of their antics...in this case "Theater Mode"

I stand to be corrected and don't know if I'm missing something here, but I fail to see the usefulness of it - if you are sitting in a movie and don't want the screen to come on, then just don't raise your arm when you feel a haptic alert...and how bright could the small screen of an Apple Watch really be anyway?

The screen lights just on the raise of the hand, it's so you can see the time normally...

Nothing to do with haptic alerts, and in a pitch dark theatre it probably is distracting to the people in the rows behind the wearer.

Not sure I understand you.

Without theater mode: (let's say your Watch is on silent mode) you want to look at the time, or you feel a notification coming through by means of a haptic alert. So what do you do? You raise your arm and look at the time or notification.

With theater mode: you want to look at the time, or read a notification...theater mode doesn't wake the screen, so raising your arm won't work...so you have to tap the screen or press the digital crown.

So my argument is - if you don't want to disturb people with the screen's glow, then just don't raise your arm? And ignore the time or notifications all together.

So you will sit stock still and not lift your arm for 2 hours? No arm around your date? no having a drink? Eating some popcorn? Scratching your nose?

It's a clever one tap function that is handy for many occasions not just the theatre, one tap and a silent dark watch. It's a clever feature that most watch owners are happy to see if you read MacRumors.

Fair enough on your point that one moves around to do other things, and I suppose people have different reasons for wanting the screen to remain dark, in different scenarios - it help saves battery power too.

But come to think of it, the option "Wake Screen on Wrist Raise" has been available already in the past, to achieve the same effect. Theater mode is basically only a shortcut of an existing feature. Instead of going through various menus to enable/disable the raise to wake function, and then also having to enable/disable silent mode, you now click one button to achieve all of that.

So as a shortcut to the above, I understand the convenience factor, and people's positive reaction to it.

For Apple to make a big hoo-ha about it, and calling it fancy names, is a little funny, that is all I'm saying - and this coming from a huge Apple fanboy.
