Apple Watch thread

I want to get one, I currently have the Fitbit.

I have mac and iPhone, that is why I am naturally now feeling the urge to get the watch too.

However, I am not entirely convinced that it is better than my Fitbit.

Can anyone with an Apple Watch please show me what your sleep tracking looks like?

Sleep tracking is very important to me.

This is Fitbit:

Remember, it does a HELL of a lot more than sleep tracking, from a data standpoint it makes Garmin look like a tinker toy.

Example?

I think Fitbit tracks far more / the same (spo, ecg, steps, HR, breathing), everything in those screenshots are on fitbit as well.

I think my question to buy comes down to, what does the apple watch track that the fitbit does not?

But I kind of have my answer looking at the images above, there is no sleep tracking (sleep tracking means stages)

So it won't work for me.

Pitty though, I was hoping a $499 device would offer better insights than a $100 one.

Out of curiosity, what use do you have for the sleep tracking?

Like do you make adjustments to your lifestyle based on it or anything?

Apple watch is trying to be an all in one, which is fine for most users

A power user in a specific function is better off getting a device designed mainly for that function

eg The Garmin run circles around apple for triathlon / swimming (Apple GPS is so buggy, it often says I swam up to the highway from the sea)

For some maybe, but an Apple watch won't last a week with me. That's why I use the Garmin Instinct. I suspect it's the case for many that actually get to leave their homes and do stuff outside. I also don't sleep with my watch on; that's just weird.

I do.

Especially deep sleep.

When I train and work, it all depends on my sleep.

Sleep is the single most important health metric available, physically and psychologically.

I want to order the Eight Sleep as well, but shipping To South Africa is more than the device itself.

That's my other concern... My fitbit lasts 7 days before I need to charge.

Heh, I meant lasting a week as in it'll get broken. I need something tough else I'd be too hesitant to use it. Another bonus is that I have the solar version of the Instinct so I can go anything between 1 month and two between charges, depending on the amount I've been outside. Granted, it's not a fancy colour screen.

Look, don't get me wrong - I Apple everything (iPad, iPhone, MBP, etc), but in my case an Apple watch is a stupid idea.

A friend of mine had an Apple Watch for a year and hates it. He has to take it off every night to charge it
He now uses a very expensive Garmin and loves it

I also heart apple, but feel I think I share the same sentiment, the Apple watch at this stage feels like a gimmick compared to fitbit and Garmin

So I guess my next upgrade should be the fitbit charge 5 or some equivalent garmin

Just sucks, because I wanted to make better use of apple health and the watch app is so native on the phone and feels I need to get the watch to make full use of the ecosystem's ability

In other words, you have an itch you want scratchin' :)

The summary of an Apple Watch is simple: its a tremendous smart watch, probably the best in the business. But, if in depth numbers relating to sleep and exercise are important to you more than anything, you'd be best served looking elsewhere.

But then it's not a smart watch?

At least not best in the business as the fitbit has all that, GPS, lte, Whatsapp, music, Spotify, etc.

So if it can't stand out in fitness and it can't stand out in health, where does it stand out?

I have both a Garmin and AW. AW for everyday use, Garmin for more hectic stuff (overnight hiking, camping etc.)

I'm also pretty sure you can get better sleep apps than the out of the box ones.

edit: point is the Garmin is more like a watch with smart features, where the Apple Watch is more a smart device with watch features.

For me it's about seamless integration and my daily activity tracking. Also working from home has made my Apple Watch indispensable with notifications from Teams and Outlook. But as you say, if you want to sleep track, it's probably not for you. As someone who doesn't see the point of sleep tracking and enjoy taking my watch off at bedtime as much as taking my shoes off after work, then it's great for me.

Smartwatch in that you can technically use it independent of your phone - especially if you get the LTE version.

I just like how Synced all the Apple devices I have are (taking a Teams/WebEx call on the watch is great). I use the poverty version (Series 3) , so maybe the Forumites with the latest one can give you proper analysis and insight. I am however looking at getting a Garmin if I were to win R5000 on that survey giveaway though :p
