Apple Watch thread

Ridiculously comfortable and unbelievable to think it’s synthetic silicone and not cotton.

A bit more pink that I expected but I’ll rock it.
I need this - where did you get it from?

If it was round I would lose most of the complications on my Watch face.

It’s just so much more practical.

I technically have 9 buttons on the face with related data.

My watch face is similar. Freakin' love it.

Having Boston time in one of the interior spots is super useful too, because that's where my employer is based along with most of my colleagues. I'm really impressed by the list of possible complications.

Research: Wearables, including Apple Watch, are poor at tracking calories

In a paper published in January this year, researchers try to evaluate the usefulness of wrist-worn smart devices for tracking energy expenditure and heart rate. The Apple Watch Series 6, Polar Vantage V and the Fitbit Sense were used by 30 healthy male and female participants engaging in weight training, cycling, running walking and even sitting. As reference devices, the team used the Polar H10 chest strap and the MetaMax 3B.

Now, we won't bore you with the details of the study or the methods used as they seem solid enough and instead, we will talk about the findings. The guys at Stronger by Science summarized it into a simple table that evaluates the accuracy, variability and reliability of each device.

As it turns out, all of the devices were pretty bad at tracking calories in almost all of the activities. Not only that, but the average deviation from the actual daily expenditure was unpredictable and wildly varying rendering the watches useless at tracking calories. That's because you can't reliably track progress even if absolute values are off. It seems that the wearables are even more inconsistent with individuals that have lower-than-average and higher-than-average energy expenditure.

The research also seems to be in line with previous ones trying to assess the same capabilities but with different wrist-worn devices.

I know this is an older post, but I did use it quite a bit for work as was testing url generation and was easier to just tap on my watch than take out my phone to see if linked correctly.

Also use it if friend sends a link or something, there's an option to send to phone's browser. This is on a Samsung watch though.

I also use Infograph but only 8 buttons. How do you manage to get your events top middle?

It only works with iCal. So you need to sync your calendars natively.

Can’t use Google Calendar app etc, it needs to sync natively to your Apple calendar.

So I’m painting today and ordinarily I’ve never worried about the wrist band because paint always came off pretty naturally without much effort after a shower.

Maybe over a few days I pick a larger piece of paint off with my nail.

Not I realise I have the “fabric” option instead and it dawned on me this might not be so simple.

At the same time it being synthetic and made from silicone it may not be an issue at all.

Will see tonight.

A small amount of meths on an old toothbrush?

Benzine likely the safest bet.

But I’ll try keep chemicals and brushes away from it as brushing might also make it fray a bit.

In the past I’ve used those alcohol wipes on the Watch itself so will give it a bit of a broader wipe with that first.

I've used a toothbrush with meths or isopropyl alcohol on my sport loop straps without any issues but I suppose they are a slightly different construction.

Turns out I worried for nothing.

Obviously not as easy as the standard band to clean, but after cleaning the Watch itself with an alcohol wipe I ran it over the band and it took care of most of it.

Then in the shower just took a nail brush to it lightly and it’s back to perfectly clean.

Fml. I placed an order on Friday.

I used Apple Pay to pay for my order, and I'm getting their emails to my main Gmail account, but they don't have a user account for that address. Wtf.

Some iStores must have recently received stock of the 45mm Nike black sport loop. It's available for purchase online - just grabbed one. Looks amazing in YouTube vids, and ultra comfy.

Received the Nike sport loop just now. It's almost insulting that the rubber band ships with the watch by default, considering how much more comfortable this sport loop is. I doubt I'll use the original band ever again.

It’s odd I don’t like them at all and actually prefer the standard band by far.

The old Nike one like the standard band was actually perfect with the holes in.
