Since recent purchase of rMBP.
I want to purchase the extended warranty.
As I understand it can be purchased within the first year.

Can I purchase the AppleCare directly or do I have to go via a core dealer to get the iCare.

How different are the two products?

I think u missed my point.
ICare is from core/Istore/incred conn. Etc

AppleCare is from US. Can it be bought online. And what are the differences?

IMO the iCare product was created most likely because of some conflict between Core and Apple over sharing of revenue related to the extended warranties.

Hmm.
So I need to purchase the iCare.

Anyone here use this extended warranty to tell us your experience.

The above thread seems to refer to the first year warranty.
 
I bought iCare with my iPhone, as far as I can remember it needs to be activated within 30 days of purchasing the device.
 
I'm not too sure about iCare for Macbooks, but I'm also considering purchasing this for my MBA.

I purchased iCare Plus at the same time of both my iPads from the iStore for R299 each - and that gives me 2 X accidental drop replacements @ R500 each.

I since registered for iCare through iCommunity for my iPhone 5S (from MTN), and went into the store to pay R299 for it and have it activated. As I didn't purchase the iCare for my phone at the same time as the phone, and as I didn't buy the phone from the iStore - they gave me iCare Express. That allows for 1 X accidental drop replacement
 
Must be activated in 30 days following purchase. Good luck with that though. Just bought iCare with my iPhone upgrade, and their website is still given me error messages in respects of my Serial Number etc. So had to send off another email to them. They usually get back to you within a few days, confirming it's registered.

Did not know about the iCare Express - but ja, as mentioned - 2x accidental breakage within the 2 years, with R500 excess per 'application'...
 
Premium Visa cards, like some Visa platinum and Woolworths Black offer free 2 year warranty (double warranty up to max of 2y) on electronic purchases made locally on those cards. So much for iCare. Considering it costs R2,799 for a MBP, buying it on a premium Visa/MC seems to be a better option if available.

ICare for MacBook can be purchased within a year or purchase.

What's the point ? The item is purchased already and I don't own any of those cards.

It's just commentary. Not many people are aware of this, and certainly I learned of this recently. Maybe next time.

I had a similar conundrum.
I wanted Applecare and not icare as Applecare offers worldwide support and is not limited to SA while iCare is for SA only.
Since I travel a lot iCare is of less use to me incase something goes wrong.

Spoke to the guys at the istore on Sandton Drive regarding this and explained to them why I need Applecare (not available in SA) and not iCare, they said yes I can purchase Applecare from another country and they will honour it.

When I was going to purchase my MBP from them, they were willing to give it to me in writing too. - unfortunately they didn't have the top end model in stock.
When I got home checked amazon and blackfriday deals were on; ended up buying my mac, applecare and a bag from them for less than the cost of what it would have cost me here for the mbp.

From what I recall they are basically all the same. [AppleCare, iCare and Digicape Protection Plan]

No. You sign on to iCommunity where they have a couple of options for you like MyEdit; R100 iStore Voucher, and the iCare Express. They send you a confirmation e-mail, and you then go to your nearest iStore, pay the R299 and have it activated. The phone also doesn't need to have been purchased from that store but needs to have been brought in by Core.

Thanks. I actually checked out iCommunity after you mentioned it and it is really cool.

I thought that the iPhones from MTN (where I also bought my 5S from) were directly from Apple in USA. At least that's what I was told by Core.

Were there any problems for you, being that you also bought your phone from MTN? I'm really interested in getting iCare express since you've mentioned it.
