Applying for a Job at large Corps.

Hey guys,

So I was retrenched as of Friday last week. Unemployed for the entire December... great stuff.

I'm Trying to apply for big corps. SMEs are way to volatile and I need more experience.

How do you get into a company such as SABMiller, Microsoft, ect.

How do you get a hold of HR? these career portals are useless... has anyone ever had any luck.

I'm looking for work specializing in Market research, Marketing and Brand Strategy.

Has anyone here had any success applying through these career portals?
 
Make sure you have an up to date LinkedIn profile.
Register on job portal sites.
Contact a recruiting agency that specialises in your field.
Register your CV on the websites of companies you are interested in.

Big companies usually make use of recruiters, if they haven't had luck with their internal processes. Also if you are without a job currently, you don't want to be too fussy and refuse to work for smaller companies - a job is better than no job. Email smaller companies with your cv and an explanation of why its in their best interest to hire you.
 
- Update your LinkedIn profile.

- Try apply on smaller more specific market / niche sites (ie: ftwonline.co.za for the clearing & forwarding industry).

- Apply directly through company websites with a customized cover letter detailing you & your interest in said company. In addition to this, follow up with a call to the company. Speak to reception, ask for an HR clerk and ask them if they received your details / info. I recently got a new job and this was one of the things that made me stand out. The HR team were impressed that I followed up. 110 candidates, 3 interviews & 1 month later I got it.

do a bit of research & target the specific companies that suit your experience / background, then approach them directly whether or not they have advertised / vacant positions.

very often a position may be coming available and it has yet to be announced - and the direct approach displays a certain amount of initiative to the employer.

if you really want to get in to a specific company, offer to work for them for a month or two without salary - again displays initiative and confidence in your own abilities.

Sounds like a pretty good piece of advice. I would definitely sacrifice a 2 or 3 months salary to increase my chances of getting a job you feel you are worth at a place you really like.
 
Research "top companies to work for" (surveys) to identify the best companies to work for. Then go to each companies career website and register your CV and apply for alerts for your specific job profile. Most large corporates do not use external recruitment agencies in the first instance and especially for entry level or widely available positions.. They use their own internal recruitment. If you are a qualified grad, you may qualify for their intern programs. Some companies work with universities, so also check wit the university for Grad programs

Do not apply for every job, especially if you do not meet the requirements as some companies will hold this against you.
Get a professional to write your CV- ideally in the passive sense. its worth every cent.
If its great experience you after, consider a consulting company such as Mckinseys, Accenture, Bain, EY etc. but be prepared to put in the hours!
