Hi ppl of Mybb,

I am wondering the best/fastest way of applying for a firearm license, what do i need, costs etc?
Anyone here got tips on how to get this done?

I am going to be going for competency/training in a month or so as i see its a requirement,,

Register as a hunter. you'll be apple to get your license a little faster, you can carry more guns and you'll obviously get more skilled with the fire arm when you go out hunting.

If your competency was a approved you probably get your license, i waited 2 years for mine.
got my license but have not received my competency certificate from them go figure.
Phone the police station where you have applied to see if your license is there yet, or phone firearm license number +27 12 353 6111 to ask far they are with the process.

Like it was mentioned, you need to apply for a competency and then for the licence. You can do them together and save a bit of time, but you can do your competency and then the licence later.

Not to steal traffic away from there, but I strongly suggest you pop over to www.gunsite.co.za and register on the forum there. Plenty of info, and you will be off to a good start.

As for costs, you will look at around R800- R1200- for the competency training, which is a legal test on the Act, as well as a practical test for whichever firearm type you want to apply for, i.e. handgun, rifle, etc. It will cost you R140 for the competency application, and a further R140 for the firearm licence applicationat the police station where you submit your application. And then it is just a waiting game.

srothman +1 on the www.gunsite.co.za, I'm also a member there and no shame in referring. I feel theres just too much info there to replicate here. Just like I refer tech queries from there to here :)

As mentioned the whole process might take time, and with them currently only approving about 52-54% (can't remember exactly) of the applications you might need to apply again/appeal a decision.

Hi guys my application for my license was approved the entire process took me just 8 month frm going to my local police station to cfr in just 8 months so am a legal firearm owner now and proudly carry a glock 19 gen 4 thanks for all the help and helpful info much appreciated

Excellent choice of firearm there tinoc! Like a good 1911, every gunowner should have a Glock 19!
When you applied, did you already have competency, or did you apply for competency and licence and it took 8 months? That is an EXCELLENT timeline!

No applied for comp n license together and yes its an excellent time frame but I made about 100 calls

Congrats tinoc!

One day I plan on applying for a license so I can buy myself a Px4 Storm :D

Oh those are nice!!!! I am very tempted to get the subcompact version for EDC.
My wife actually wants one too, because, and I quote, "It's pretty".

She's right! It is very pretty :p

Love the looks and it's the new SAPS gun. Love it!

It's unbelievable how difficult they make it for ordinary citizens to legally own firearms for the sake of self-defense in this ****ry. I'm surprised people are willing to jump through so many hoops and spend so much.

Honestly, it's not that it costs so much in terms of your application fee, but rather all the phone calls, time, and patience that is required.
At the end of the day, this is where theywant us. Where people say "Heck, I'm not going to apply because it is too much effort". It is as much a deterrent as all the other things.
