We have a nearly 8 month old male Springer Spaniel who we plan to neuter but are undecided on an appropriate age. Research and discussions with vets vary from 4 - 6 months of age right up to 18 months but I have no actual experience. Any opinions or factors to consider? He is quite boisterous at the moment and has started showing interest sexually with other dogs.

Wife is a vet - she would typically say 6 months. The longer you leave them the longer they get chance to learn bad behaviours such as marking etc. So now is the right time :) get all your vaccinations up to date at the same time then :)

Thanks for the input, I always thought it best to leave him until 12 - 18 months before neutering to give him the best development but some say it is not necessary, others are for it. The bad behaviour idea is what intrigues me, he has ramped up being boisterous and amorous in the last few weeks, which I believe is down to his hormones pumping at the moment. I discussed this with my girlfriend and have booked him in for next week, they will remove his dewclaws at the same time so he is not going to be happy.

Haha thats for the best do all at once and remember keep the VAX uptodate, dont wont to lose him over a few hundred rand.

I waited till 18 months because I wanted my Jack Russell to fully develop (get muscular). Didn't learn any bad habits luckily. He is still small though so that didn't help me anyway xD

This was one of the thoughts I had but the jury is out based on the research I have done. Our puppy is fxxking intelligent, one of the smartest dogs I have come across, he knows how to open doors unless they are locked, he has mimicked my girlfriends parents cats to try get through windows back in to the house when we are out and learns tricks at a rapid rate. I believe the risk of him picking up bad habits is quite high so he is getting neutered next week, poor guy.

I dropped the little guy at the vet this morning, he was excited for a car trip and loved getting out the car but when the front door opened to the vet practice, all hell broke loose  He backtracked so much he slipped out his collar and headed straight for the open door, I managed to just catch him and tried to calm him down before getting him back inside to the vet. Are vasectomy's this stressful?
