When I go into the Market and try download the App, it gives me the message that the app will be downloaded but then the download only starts downloading 20-40 minutes after that!

What could be the problem?

I have noticed this as well and have googled it a couple of times, seems its a known problem with the market and some get it, some don't. What I have noticed with mine, is that it works better when only connected with 3G instead of WiFi. When I'm on wifi it sometimes doesn't start at all...

I have been running Android 2.1 on my Tytn2 for about a year now, and the same....in all the builds and versions, especially the last few this has been the case. Possibly getting my first proper Android phone tomorrow, the Desire...keen to see if it is any better.

The phone itself will be MUCH better! But if you referring to the apps taking so long to start, then no, it won't be better. But lately mine is fine, on 3G, never trying on wifi anymore cause it never works.

Turn off your routers wireless security and test it then. See if that makes it any better.

HTC Hero 1.5 download stuff from Market thru WIFI and no lag for me. WIFI is configured with WPA2 and SSID hidden. Takes around 1 minute to pickup and connect to the WIFI network.

Okay, got my new phone....both Wifi and 3g downloads VERY fast and instantly. There is definitely a clash somewhere. There is no protection on my Wifi, never been, but considering it was a WM6.5 phone running Android previously I thought it was just the way things were. Now everything is awesome:-)

If I go to the Downlaods tab and an app takes long to start downloading, I just go back and search for other apps and then not long after that I see in the notification bar that the app has been downloaded and installed... which leads to be believe that maybe the Market app just has a problem updating the download progress...? BUt this trick doesn't work all the time tho...
