Aquarium Hobby

New job, work from home most of the time.
Would really like a salt water tank, but the maintenance... It's past my patience time. There is so much more work in a salt water tank than an fresh water tank.

Tread carefully with that thought, the costs involved with sw now are pretty outrageous, even just the extra power used for lights/chiller/skimmer/pumps etc.
Rewarding but not nice on the wallet.

You don’t want to change all the water because then you reset the entire ecosystem every time as well, which could in itself be causing even more algae.

But yes either change the type of light of you want it on longer, or just put it on a timer.

Also fun fact gold fish can live 20-30 years. 😅
Like the look of gold fish, but growing up. I've had a few of them, and as mentioned before in a very small tank. Yes they are pretty to look at, graceful and complete diva's. Not for now

The nice thing about freshwater is you can probably avoid the heaviest costs. You can really go simple and still have a good setup.

Yip much easier deal, anything sw related is now eyewatering level with prices.

They are terribly mistreated as the default fish everyone gets sold as “easy mode” kept in crappy glass bowls with terrible water conditions.

And then people think they did a good job if they survived for 3 years.

My wife has had this pergola idea in the background for the longest time.

What she doesn’t know is that alongside said pergola and wood decking I have a notion to build an above ground pond clad in the very same decking. 😂

So, Bigger tank then? Car can sleep outside..

Nah I actually want to go tiny because I want it to just sit on my desk without a fuss for a stand etc.

The one in the garage is one of those triangular corner setups so a bit tricky to find a place it could live easily. I’ve actually never used it, came as a sort of package deal with Boyu tank I took off a guy who went overseas.

I’ve always wanted to do right by Betta’s and have one in a proper sized tank, fully planted maybe with some fancy shrimp which is the one thing I’ve never done before.

I get it, makes sense, you want internal peace on your desk. What size is that tank, 30, 40 gallon?
If only you where here in Durban, I've got a specialty shop around the corner, salt & fresh, setups, maintenance, etc and only deal in tropical fish, again salt and fresh.

With a place like Durban, I'm sure Cape town Will have specialty shops like this

The butterfly my son had was in his freshwater tank - one of these:

They do unfortunately eat smaller fish so you're limited with tank mates but they're hardy and very intelligent fish.
Finished watching the video and some others, these fish are really impressive and Amazing. Wow! not sure I can have one with the small Tetras though

Oh yeah lots of them around.

It’s only 6 gallons.

There’s a new place McMerwe not too far from me that appears to have become the go to to fish and everything else shop in Cape Town.

I’m sure the old Panorama Petshop I went to for decades is still kicking too.

Only came out a few months ago.

Yeah, local pet shops, okay. As a starter and not as experienced. It seems finding a specialty store as a beginner is a really good idea

With the modern world of YouTube you can pretty much do everything online.

Even live stock these days.
Agree, but talking to someone with a specialty and tropical maintenance store might be the way to go.
What I'm trying to say, is newbies should go to these places, get the advice they need and make sure no fish die. Specialty stores would be much more beneficial than just going to a pet store, by fish, they say nothing and just give you a plastic bag with fish and water. From my experience with these guys, they ask what do you have? then start suggesting best fits, species you can have in the same environment.
This store especially wants to see water tests, photos, etc before selling you any fish
