Hi guys

So i bought an alfa giulietta distinctive model about a year ago. Great car, but i'm looking to move on for a number of reasons.

I want to get a 5 door hatchback. Something fast enough that I don't feel like i'm losing out too much from the AR [which has 125kw]. I've been looking at a 2nd hand g5 or g6 gti. I want to spend 200 - 250k. My only concern about these cars is my perception of them as being high risk for theft/hijacking compared to the alfa.

Thoughts?
Thanks for your replies.

That's a horizontal movement at best - the bank will be happy.

Ja the prices are more or less the same. I'm not changing for financial reasons.

You want to go from a hand painted Picasso and change to a printed canvas found in Game that everyone has hanging in their lounge.

And for what? To save yourself maybe a second on your next robot to robot drag race.
pointless is as pointless does.

Don't waste money on old Golfs, you can get a newer low mileage Astra J 1.6T with 132kw for about R200k.

Pointless exercise - a newish Giulietta is worth zip at the moment, so you are going to lose out heavily, for what? A GTi is about half a second quicker to 100 on a good day.

Don't waste your money because your bum is itching.

I agree with Fazda, keep the Giulietta. Sure depreciation is a bitch but it is only a problem if you trade it in - so avoid doing that.

When a car gets to the age of 10+ years they are all within a few grand of each other anyway so hold on to it for as long a syou can.

Am I missing something but it doesnt look like OP is looking for a faster car?

He said he wants something with similar power so it does not feel like he is missing out on the power he currently has which I completely understand.

OP, what are you "number of reasons" for looking for a different car? That would help us recommend a replacement?

Looking at what you have and your replacement ideals I would imagine size and maintenance/reliability is one?

Why do you resume Alfas are unreliable? Too much topgear :P

re·sume verb \ri-ˈzüm\
: to begin again after stopping

: to take (a seat, place, position, etc.) again : to go back to (something

pre·sume verb \pri-ˈzüm\
: to think that (something) is true without knowing that it is true

: to accept legally or officially that something is true until it is proved not true

: to do (something) that you do not have the right or permission to do

;)

any decent golf 6 gti is going to be close to out of your price range.

I recently saw a 2012 QV guilietta going for 249k with 30k on the clock. So you are going to get next to nothing for your car.
Keep it or be prepared to take a huge knock

My AMAZING phones auto correct

Also Faz - that white mito TcT you have feels very sluggish, or rather seems to have weird throttle response

If you had asked me to take you for a drive in it, I would have explained exactly why!! ;)

That box takes quite a bit of getting used to, and there is definite turbo lag if you just floor it. NOT my first choice!! The manual is great! :)

Sorry about the thread jack OP

I may be willing to try it again, who knows? You guys need a manual for me!

Keep the Giulietta. Its a wonderful car but AR do depreciate very badly. When you buy a AR it should be a long term commitment and if you try and sell it now you going to cry.

We don't have a manual demo unit, so you will just have to take my word for it that it goes better than the TCT!! ;) :p

I know you don't :(. Only demo is in Umthlanga, and they are useless. Couldn't even have it there for me on a Saturday, the accountant had it.....

Unfortunately there has been a complete clamp down on getting new demo vehicles, and when/if we do, they only get cars that are quick movers, so the chances of us getting a manual MiTo are about 1 000 000 000 000 to one :(

Guys, i'm not changing to the gti for performance reasons. I just took a look at autotrader and gumtree and saw that they are available in the 200-250 price range.

As for my reasons for selling, the car just seems to be a magnet for accidents, and it's not because i drive recklessly or anything (although admittedly, i did scrape someone's bumper once while taking a corner too wide). It was in the panel beaters for a month about 3 months after i got the car for a accident while my friend was driving and just last week my windscreen got a big crack in it from stone damage, which i'm still waiting to replace. It's got a couple of scratches here and there. I know it sounds like a silly reason to change a car but sometimes it just seems the car wasn't meant for me. I drove a fiesta for 4 years before the alfa and never seemed to get in any trouble.

From a financial point of view, my settlement value is 250k atm which is about the same as the going price for my car and is also how much i'm looking to spend on my next car. So my monthly installments will work out to about the same.
