ARC on Sony Bravia BX45

Let me apologise before the time for the lengthy explanation, but want to get as much info in as possible

I just bought a BX45 and a BDV-E190 all in one HT. According to the manual I should be able to setup ARC via these 2 components. But I for the love of me can't do it. I am not sure if it is the cable or if it is just me being daft.

1) Setup - TV (BX45) ----> BDV-E190 via HDMI cable on HDMI port 1
2) Mede8er ----> TV via HDMI cable on port 2
3) Either get ARC working and push sound via HDMI or via Optical cable

I did some googling and most of the people say, replace the cable with a HDMI ver 1.4 cable, but also according to google, ver 1.4 has been around for more than 2 years now. So I am sure that most cables should be 1.4 already. Or am I just mistaken

Just as an extra, with the HDMI connected, the HT does not show up with the Bravia sync. I got it to work once and then changed the cable now its not showing again.

So my questions are:
1) Does anybody have this setup and have it working or should I just purchase a HDMI 1.4 cable. I don't want to purchase unnecessary cables. Have enough HDMI cables lying around already

2) I also tried pushing the Mede8er sound via optical cable. Red light lights up on both sides, but no sound. HOW ??
 
Not all HDMI ports support ARC. Just check your tv and make sure your hdmi is plugged in to the HDMI port that supports ARC.
Normally its HDMI 1.

*EDIT - Also you may need to enable it on your devices, check your settings.

Too be honest, I haven't tested it properly. Didn't have chance, but from what I hear its fine. Paid 1.5k, so didn't expect much. Can't give comparison between E190 and D5500, never heard the D5500
 
Most hdmi cables at game etc are 1.3. www.hdcabling.co.za for 1.4. (I've seen 1.3 cables at around 20 times the price of theirs in the shops)

You might find that the tv doesn't send audio to hdmi1 with arc when the input you're using is hdmi though. Can't you plug the mede8er into the ht?
