shiz i saw this on 9gag and it was you?
Similar to @Rocket-Boy Also have a ton of ESP32's (Wemos D1 minis which are dirt cheap) around the house, garage, greenhouse with DS18B20 temp sensors, all sending data to OpenHab.
On the doors using magnet sensors also reporting to OpenHab. When the sensors trigger it sents a call to ZoneMinder to start recording on a the cameras.

There are currently a viral video of someone doing it, and it was my inspiration to also do it (my twist is using a floppy drive)
All the cool kids like @Rocket-Boy uses Home Assistant ... so that is something else on my #lockdown todo list ... move to Home Assistant
You wont regret it, HA has such a great community and their integrations are awesome. I know Openhab has a great following too and is very capable. I tried it at the same time as HA but I preferred HA.nice! I also use OpenHab. My PIRs and door sensors are updating a mqtt queue to which OpenHab subscribes. My camera is monitored by Motion and embed the video on my OpenHab dashboard ...

You can use the Alexa components in HA or even just a Nodered plugin to use Alexa. The deal breaker for me was Home Assistant Cloud is a subscription service (At least was the last time I checked) OpenHab cloud is free. This is needed for my integration into Alexa

You are able to expose switches and automations in HA. You then let Alexa search for devices, this way you don't need to interface with an AWS service or HA cloud. But then to use Alexa don't you need to use HA Cloud otherwise how will Alexa talk back to HA
With Nodered I see you can use something like https://alexa-node-red.bm.hardill.me.uk/
