Hi everyone. I'm due for a desktop upgrade soon, but was wondering whether it is better to buy now or to wait until january? Are the prices expected to increase in the new year?

Thanks:)

I think prices will stay the same. The rand dollar is better now.

It's all up to whether you think the rand will strengthen or weaken.

I say don't hesitate. Otherwise you'll always be waiting for the next best thing.

What are your current specs?

Wait for it...I7, denube, hd 5 series

They will force some of the prices of the good stuffs now down.

i7 is over priced. Deneb(Phenom II) is due end of January. Hd5 series march-june.

That's why I asked for his current specs.

Maybe a budget too.

Yeah but by the time these items become affordable, there'll be anew Intel CPU and a HD 6 series and if you keep waiting, you'll never buy anything

I don't have the budget to go for the top end of the range;) I'm not into gaming, just need a solid computer for doing a lot of java coding (using netbeans) and multitasking (eg. 3 monitors, 20 webpages open, itunes, netbeans, msn, etc at the same time). The price range is flexible because i'm not sure what to expect to pay for what computer(??). I looked around a bit on the internet yesterday and was thinking maybe a 3Ghz core 2 duo or something, but really i have no clue (dont even know what that would cost). Maybe someone can give me some help please:P ? And then of course do i go for Vista or keep XP?

E8400 3.0GHZ
1GB DDR2 667
160GB HDD
Intel G31 Mobo
300W ATX Chassis
Keyboard & Mouse

R3,699 @ PCZone

I'd recommend Vista x64 with SP1.
Some people say have they have issues with it, but I've been running it for months without a single issue. Rock solid and it doesn't start shlowing down like XP after a few months.
If you gonna go with Visat tho, you should go for at least 2GB ram, 4GB is optimal

would a quad core suit my purposes better than a duo? judging by that link from PCZone they seem to be cheaper than i had expected... or would my money be better spent elsewhere?

LOL man don't get what they guy posted.

Since you're into multitasking and need 3 monitor support you're gonna spend at least 3 times much as what that guy posted.

I don't even think he read your post before posting it.

I'll post a build or two in a few min.

PCZone is about as cheap as they come.
For the purposes you've mentioned, IMO, I don't think a Quad Core will benefit you much. If you're going to be encoding videos etc then yes, it'll be of better use. But for internet browsing and playing music, a Core2 Duo is plenty.

I'd rather spend the extra cash on RAM - Vista will perform better and it'll speed up the multi-tasking. And you'll need a graphics card too to run those monitors.

Where about are you based? Cos PCZone is Durban only...

Dude he asked for pricing on a 3.0ghz duo...

The problem with PC zone is that they give you **** PSU's so you have to buy another one from them to run a gfx card.

Yes, they've always got small PSU's...
I always customise my machine from them so I've never had a problem.

I suppose not everyone runs high-end graphics which is why they go for smaller PSU's in the stock systems

He also said he likes multi tasking and you post a pc with 1gig ram.

He also said he wants to run 3 monitors and you post a pc with on board graphics.

Oh and he said he thinks he wants a 3.0Ghz core2 duo.

Forgive me, I assumed this fellow half a brain and figured he'd know that he need graphics to run 3 monitors. And I did mention that he should upgrade the ram.

Sheesh, some of you ppl are much too sensitive

Why AMD though?

Why not. He's not overclocking. There's no advantage to going Intel. Yes, I know clock for clock the perform better, but at a price.

The is no valid reason to not look at AMD if you're not overclocking.

Also he likes multitasking. An extra core will be a lot more useful than a few extra Mhz.
