My friend is going to Dubai - I want to ask him to buy me some electronics (camera and laptop/tablet).

Is Dubai really that much cheaper then SA or are prices roughly the same or more expensive?

I was told things used to be cheap there, but not so much anymore.

The airport is more expensive than what the same goods cost in SA.

You may get some bargains in town, but you have to know your prices.

In general, not so good.

I cant really send the guy to town - he is probably just going to buy the stuff at the nearest mall. I presume the mall prices would be similar to the airport right?

Few months back I got the Samsung Galaxy S3 at the airport for just under R6k. Think the cash price here was going on R8k? But with the Rand a bit weaker the savings is probably not as much.

Definitely not. I was in transit in dubai once and like a dumbass went and bought a canon dslr without researching the price in SA. When i got back I saw the same camera selling at makro for R3000 cheaper. Not sure hwo the pricing is outside the airport, but inside the airport is a definite no no.

Damn! Okay so the airport is definitely out. I doubt he would buy from there though. Where abouts in town do the guys reckon some bargains can be found?

Not that I could tell no, you might save a few rands here or there but generally the pricing is on par.

Definitely not the airport, where you are very restricted in your selection, and in many cases you would have trouble getting the warranty honoured -- is that worth it for a few hundred rands' savings? If you are actually in Dubai itself however there are some bargains to be had, but whereas you can take a faulty item back after a few days if you buy it in SA, that is not always the case in Dubai even if you are still there when things go wrong!

I wouldn't buy anything major there now that SA electronics prices are so much more competitive than in the bad old days.

It's hardly worthwhile, especially considering the risk of expensive items breaking here. I've found that during their "Summer Sale" period, some places may have a bargain, but generally most things are priced similarly to ours
