For better or for worse, I'm looking forward to delivery of a new MTN USB modem. Just occurred to me though: anyone know whether they are locked or open? Tks!

I don't think they are locked. I got one last week and it works with a vodacom sim.

Not locked... I can use Vodacom, CellC and Virgin Sim Cards in it...

It wouldn't be legally correct to network lock datacards or cellphones, because of Mobile Number Portability. I went to europe and used a T-mobile simcard in the modem. Saves me money with roaming charges. :P

I believe there was something with the MTN E220 firmware and other SIMs that caused problems. MTN have a very specific firmware to accommodate their 64k SIMs which made the device problematic with other SIMs.

My MTN E270 works perfectly with Vodacom.

Other way round. Their 64K SIMs wouldn't work on other devices.
There was a similar problem with Virgin Mobile 64K SIMs and the Huawei E620, Virgin swapped them for 128K SIMs (from a different manufacturer).
