Are SSDs worth it?

Other than bragging rights over the e-penis extension they offer.

The price to GB ratio is still to high for me to consider a bigger drive but I was wondering would I see any game performance improvement in running my OS from a smaller, 60gb SDD with the game files on a bigger SATA drive?

When the price comes down I'll no doubt be moving towards having a larger SSD but I'd like to know whether having a smaller SSD drive to run the OS warranted the current high pricetag?

For a gaming PC I'd say make it the last priority. First get a decent graphics card, CPU and screen and then you can go for something like a SSD. Getting a SSD will not improve your gaming experience or performance. At best it will reduce the load times of maps.

For a workstation PC, and SSD could make a world of a difference, depending what kind of work you do.

I'd recommend that you rather go for a bigger SSD that could contain your games + operating system at the same time. You can do with a 60GB one, but then you'll have to optimize your Windows 7 installation so that it does not take up that much space and then you'll only be able to install 1 game onto the SSD or perhaps 2 if the games aren't that big.

Today I was at a friend of mine and he's still using a 120GB Maxtor HDD for his operating system and his system startup time is awful compared to mine that has a 120GB G.Skill Phoenix SSD. I didn't really notice that BF3 was loading longer than mine, but then again I didn't time it with a stopwatch either.

Why don't you get a SSD cache drive? Store all your files on a normal hdd, but the SSD is used as a cache drive so you will have both speed and performance. I have ordered my 60GB SSD OCZ cache drive from esquire. Still waiting for it to arrive, however esquire from this forum said he has ordered 20 units.

once you go ssd, you will ask yourself why did you not buy a ssd earlier, its like your pc is in turbo mode or something :P

Yes, it is obviously better.

I cannot understand all the fuss about boot times however. Why are so many people still switching off their PC's at night?

Is it also one of the old habits carried over from the 20th century that just won't die like faxes? ;)

People still ask this question?

Of course it's worth it. Just get a 120gig. Don't me that Crap about too expensive coz I'm sure spending 2grand on a cpu or gfx card would be underspending.

No question about it. I just built a new rig and put in a 120gig SSD, and my goodness what a difference! No words can explain the speed difference to your general overall experience in windows and with loading times for games. And not by a few seconds.

I have bf3, steam games and my OS on the SSD and still have 50 some odd gigs left. Plus there are some applications that I use frequently that I have also installed on it.

I have heard people saying that once you go SSD you will kick yourself for not getting one sooner. And man where they correct.

I am willing to spend on 2 of them for RAID, as I already know the benefits of RAID-0..
Running 2x Velociraptors in RAID-0, and I beat most people into loading a level - my PC is on 24/7 - So I wont see much difference in "boot times".
Having said that, i think a quicker reboot might be a breath of fresh air.. So will put some money away to get 2x decent size ones soon..

One of my mates showed me the speed of SSD - and I said YUP its worth the 15k he spent on them at the time :) lol

Anthro:
Running SSD's in RAID is rather pointless, because you use SSD's for the fast random seek times and not for the maximum sequential read/write speeds (which is the only thing that RAID will improve).

Some SSD's don't support TRIM/garbage collection while in RAID.

I have the Vertex 3 which is pretty quick and to be honest I don't think it is worth it (for me). Sure it is a bit faster but most apps don't take more than a second to load on a normal mechanical drive either (word, excel, chrome, etc).

I actually seldom can feel the difference between my SSD and notebook with a mech hdd. They are both quad core with plenty ram in case you are wondering.

Come on... really? I have two PC's next to each other with very similar specs, one SSD other not. One gets into MW3 maps (online) at least 10 seconds before the other.... As for start up times ... 35 seconds to shutdown & restart.

Yea try loading up internet, programs after a restart. Normal drive 2-3 minutes, ssd instantly.

The difference is insane, i work in a few programs and what used to take 2-3 minutes takes a few seconds now. The difference for me is insane.

No improvement whatsoever.
SSD = (blazing) fast load times for whatever is actually on the SSD. Thats it. Decide how important that is to you, and you'll know if you want a SSD or not
