Are SSDs worth it?

How are they too expensive? You can pick up 120gb's for just over 1k. I wonder when ssd's will be considered cheap? when they hit 500 bucks for a 1tb or something.

Considering people blow 5k on gpu's, 3k on cpu's and 2-4k on mobo's ssd's are pretty cheap.

I can pick up a 2TB HDD for just over a R1K. So it is more expensive, R/MB than you think. I don't think it's worth it at this moment. I'd rather wait that 3 seconds longer for my PC to boot or wait 2 seconds longer for my game to load, than waist money on this. And if I want faster, I think I can make a deacent RAID 0, thats still cheaper R/MB and with more HDD space to spare.

I used the instructions here ( http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorial...move-during-windows-7-installation.html?ltr=U ) and did it during the install. Makes it a lot cleaner and do not have to tinker in the registry.

I agree, Pastel and Pervasive is a real dog on large databases. I wish Pastel would change to MS SQL (although I have heard rumors!!!) and their new products all run on MS SQL..

I like your setup, it makes a lot of sense. You'd probably get similar performance with a 64GB SSD run as a cache drive, but in your case you wouldn't have the drawbacks to drive caching.

On the use of an SSD for Pervasive, that's one of the reasons why I recommend a SSD with a backup schedule for a server that just needs to run a few things including Pastel. I hated fixing Pastel and Pervasive databases because they would take ages to recover.

Did you just remap your user folder to your 500GB Hybrid?

Until you have used it, you won't understand.

I could never get more than 5.9 on Windows Experience on a normal hard drive with a SSD I have 7.9 my PC average is now 7.8 just my ram a bit lowish :)

Your PC is only as good as your worst part in it

How did you arrive at 2-3 seconds faster to boot?
In my case it was a 120 second difference in boot times. Games (obviously it depends on the game) load times are down another 5-20 seconds, great for those games where you switch between areas all the time. I think you are underestimating the performance of SSDs

Exactly, it's the difference between load times and no load times that makes it worth it.

I noticed a speed improvement in everything. Multitasking especially. It really shows you the speed of your CPU and how you are held back by HDD speed.

Beans has no idea what it is about an ssd that makes it so amazing. I think he checks 120gb with high r/w speeds, doubt he knows about the seek time which is practically zero. Click on something boom it goes.

The best feeling in the morning is starting your pc and when windows is first loaded up, it is usable instantly. No waiting just click and go. Then of course work applications and the general feel of the pc. I have lost that feeling because i am used to it now but my goodness it was awesome.

Beans let me put it this way, would you rather spend 3k on a nice i7 cpu or 500 bucks on a celeron? Both are cpu's so i guess the celeron would be your choice :D.

Hahaha celeron.

To restore all "lost" feeling instantly, simply use a pc with a normal hdd for a few seconds :p

I will also try out SSD in the future, when the price makes more sense to me, but at the moment I like what I got. So if it makes sense to you, go ahead.
Actually I'm using a R2k AMD CPU for some time now. And it's funny, but my PC is also usable right after startup. Just click and go.
What are you using, Windows?

EDIT: I've done some research a while ago on SSD's, is it true what they say that they don't last as long as HDD??? And that they are prone to failure.

nicely put, mr killadoob.

it amazes me how much people will spend to boost some or other component by a really small percentage, but then baulk at the idea of an SSD purely because it is so small!

I used to do the registry mod story, and came across the site when I was looking at setting up the SSD properly. Does make life easier...

Just discovered that the Vertex 3 has a new firmware out, but updating wipes the HDD and from comments on the Ocz forum, it seems that they recommend a full reinstall of windows and not an image restore. Just got all the programs back the way I want them..........Think I'll give the firmware a miss..

I've always wondered where I could enter into audit mode for a new installation. God, if only I had known how to do that back when I was still a techie in retail, would have saved me many an hour!
