Are tablet PCs cannabalising netbook sales?

Wait till you see what is going to happen when iPads are allowed to be sold with cell contracts.
 
I beg to differ.
An entry level tablet costs twice as much as an entry level NetBook while it does half the job.
Maybe it might be true in America and Europe where the tablets are much cheaper and almost everyone has a PC at home.
 
Of all computing segments, tablets will cannibalize netbooks most.

Netbooks have always been a compromise between content-creation and content-consumption devices but typically with a heavy leaning towards content consumption and mobility.

Tablets are much better for consuming content and thus we'll see a dip in notebook sales for this purpose.
 
i need both....
Me getting a tablet just delayed my notebook upgrade for a little longer...
that's life...we deal with it...
 
ASUS Eee Pad Transformer, its a tablet... oh wait no its a netbook... or is it a nettabook?

Who cares, it did replace my netbook with ease and when I want to read a book off goes the screen and I have a tablet.
 
I use a PC at home and a laptop for work and my SGS (for both). I have never desired a netbook or tablet as I have no need for either. I CAN understand the possibility of the tablet together with a smartphone replacing the netbook tho.

+1 Hardly use my netbook these days.
 
My iPad + roll-up keyboard solution works way better than a netbook ... as much as I need it to be, a little as I need it to be. I started to really enjoy iWork on the iPad ... truly fantastic office alternative. I have to give a presentation in Joburg next Wednesday and all I'm taking with me is my iPad.
 
They each target a different target group.

IMO thier was always a market for tablets just that no one was making any good ones with good software and now some one has. Many bought laptops as a compromise to having a pc on the go (not talking of people who choose between laptops and desktops but people who choose to complement).

I was looking for a great mobile computing device where mobilty beat everything else when I was in 3rd year University and there was nothing than but the tablet has finally come and meets that requirement. I never bought a laptop as I felt it was too cumbersome rather opting to save my cash and carry aroud my textbooks (like 3-4 kgs of them) but wiht the tablet its now reduced to 0.7kg). Simpel ergonomics.
 
I would never consider a netbook, almost the same size as a laptop, but useless in terms of performance, I feel tablets with tegra are probably superior in terms of CPU capabilities and I am considering one purely for email purposes when I am not in the office.
 
I find myself need a mix of both (or 3 if you consider the cell too).

Acer AS8951G for work on the move (development). Gets me 4.5 hours battery life in peformance mode with full screen brightness. 7 hours in power save mode. That is LONG for a notebook with a spec like this (18.4" screen and Core i7 Sandybridge).
Asus Transformer for where I don't need the power or functionality of my notebook.
HTC Desire HD for everything else and some of the above.

I cannot wait for the day a tablet is powerful enough to code on and I just plug it into an LCD screen and keyboard for coding on site at a clients, and pair it with a blue tooth headset for taking calls. Then when not coding it becomes my good old tablet for everything else. The day is coming. Especially with Win 8 on ARM. It is just not coming fast enough :) One device for everything.Would love to just carry around a 10" tablet that does literally everything I need it to. It is coming :)

Agreed. I hope they dont dumb down the interface to that of a phone like whats currently happening. When the day comes that is.

From what I have read so far on various forums, is Win 8 will be implementing a UI similar to Win Phone 7 devices (Metro) as well as a standard desktop UI. So we get the best of both worlds and can use the interface relevant to the device. Heres hoping this is true.

Why are iPads not available with contracts?

I see Samsung Galaxy Tabs on contracts but not iPads.

I wouldn't mind getting that Asus Transformer 3G+WiFi with a data bundle contract,
especially if my phone and transformer could share the same number,
so that the data bundle could be shared between the 2 devices as well as allow for sms etc to get delivered on both devices.

Absolutely, I would love a solution like this as well. I would assume you would have to have twin sim cards or something similar?

That way I could keep my current cellphone which is quite small and keep the Tablet in my backpack or whatever to pull out when I need it.

You can add up to 5 data sims to your primary number that share one data package - month-to-month or contract. Afaik you won't receive sms's on them though.
