Okay, so I have at least 36 eggs in my fridge and the expiry date (if those are even legit) are no longer visible. How can I tell if they are fit for human consumption? I recall something on 702/CapeTalk about dropping them into water to determine whether they are fresh or not, but not-fresh is different to off right?

Believe me you'll know when an egg is off when you crack it open - the smell is indescribable :wtf:

It's only happened to me once years ago but is firmed etched in my memory :(

carefully place in container of water and if it sinks it's fine. If It floats then call your nearest Chinese Shop.

This

IIRC if they sort of just hover then they're still fresh but not for long.

Thanks, couldn't remember it was sinking or floating that means they're fine

Precisely why I'd rather not crack them open and drop them in water.

I junked a frying pan because of that :(

Just remember that a egg that is off has more gas inside it and will thus float. We all know gas is bad m'kay :D

Floating Test

1. Place the egg into a bowl of cold water. The water level should be about 2 times higher than the egg.
2. Observe what the egg does.
- Fresh eggs will sink to the bottom of the bowl and probably lie on their sides.
- Slightly older eggs (about one week) will lie on the bottom but bob slightly.
- If the egg balances on its smallest tip, with the large tip reaching for the top, it's probably close to three weeks old.
- Eggs that float at the surface are bad and should not be consumed.

Sloshing Test

1. Hold the egg up to your ear.
2. Shake the egg gently.
3. Listen for sloshing. If you can hear a distinct sloshing sound, it's best not to consume the egg. If you can't hear anything, the egg is likely fine.

Thanks, I have concluded that they're off and would kill me if I cracked them open. Next up: what does a person do with 36 rotten eggs?

What do you do with other garbage like fishbones when you're done braaiing a snoek?

Throw them at someone with irritating dogs :D

Even if I put them gently into the wheelie bin they will break when the landscape architect takes the trash to the street. Then it'll stink the whole of the Helderberg out for a month. I think I'll leave them in the Telkom Direct shop after they abuse me tomorrow when I visit....

Put them in a plastic bag and tie three knots, put plastic bag in another bag tie three knots, repeat again. Aternatively crack them open and flush down toilet.

Cut one open and if it looks like this I will send a driver for them. Lots of Chinese off the fishing boats looking for 1000 year old egg. http://encyclopedia.thefreedictionary.com/fermented+egg

Yolk must be dark green and creamy

Whites must be brown jelly.
