Hi there,

Are there any hardware solutions to split local and international traffic?

E.g. An ADSL router that accepts 2 accounts, and routes accordingly (local and international) based on routing tables?

Would solve a lot of problems...?

Dont see why you would need a hardware solution or even mess around with RouteSentry if you are using ISA2004
 
Mikrotik ROS on a dedicated PC - P1 is fine.
That is what I use, and I have about 5 different outgoing "things". (2 ADSL, VPNs, Wireless)

Any self respecting router these days have an option called "half bridge" or "pppoe relay" mode, this allows you to create two connections.

Some of us use "routesentry" to set up the routes for us, in that way the router is the international account and the dialup connection local, split local and international, sweet hey? ;) :D :p

Have a Netgear DG834G v4 which has a pppoe relay option, but does not actually work! Maybe it will in the next firmware.

Have my boss wanting to remote to the office, but wasting our 3Gig TI bandwidth on this seems such a waste since he uses the same concurrently from his house.

Want to set a solution that he uses a local only to connect to the office, as bandwidth costs will be so much less.

Any other suggestions? Apparently ISA 2008 will support multiple wan connections, but hey, it not here yet!
 
What do you meant the option doesn't work? Have you tried creating a dialup connection to test it?
 
Ok, so apparently ISA 2004 wont work, even if you are using RouteSentry. Reason being it doesnt support multiple gateways (those bright devs at M$ in all their wisdom made it this way). Alternatively you could use a Linux or BSD gateway/firewall with a squid caching proxy if you are feeling adventurous (there are resources on the forum how to split local and international accounts under linux, just look and you will find it)

IMO the hardware option is a bad idea, you will realise why if/when the router kicks the bucket.

The 834 has a "hidden" page that allows you to set it for PPPoE.
Try a Google search, if you do not come right I will hunt for the answer again. I stopped buying those after going through 3 in less than 18 months.
 
You can do this with IPCop - but it's a bit of a hack. Perhaps the Mikrotik route(r) is better. :D
 
Teraside, Re DG834G v4, read on one of the forum posts, that the PPPoe relay does not work as yet for this version.

The option is there, clear as day, but it cannot be checked, and trying with a created dial up does not work even after trying to check the option, which just unchecks itself.

Will check IPCop and Microtik so long. Thanks.
 
Yarik11, I've never even heard of that brand.
Try to stick to Billion, NetGear or Linksys ADSL routers. D-Link & TP-Link routers are also capable of half-bridging / PPPoE relaying. Any ADSL router would do if you're gonna use a dedicated device to split the traffic.

If you want to split traffic for a single PC, then you could run RouteSentry/a batch file/my Traffic Splitter app.
As soon as you have more than one PC on the LAN, then it becomes a bit more complicated to split the traffic for all the PC's without having to run those apps/script on every single PC.

For multiple PC's that you want to split traffic, I would either recommend getting a Linksys WRT54G/GL and use gatecrasher's script. If you can't find one for less than R400, then rather go for the MikroTik RB750 for R310 (ex VAT) from Scoop Distributions.

Alternatively, if you don't care about power consumption, you could run a dedicated server (which can be like a Pentium 2 or something slow) with IPCop or RouterOS.

Just planning to run it on one PC, but would like for it to work for my PS3 as well...

So just buying a regular Netgear or Dlink and using RouteSentry should work?
 
Linksys routers are from Cisco if I'm not mistaken :)

Surely CISCO stuff are excellent, but its quite expensive too - too expensive for most home users...

Yarik11: do you already have an ADSL router? If you have, first check if it has something like PPPoE Relay that you can enable. It might even be enabled by default.
To check if PPPoE Relay is working, let the router dial a PPPoE connection (which should be the default router setup) and then dial another account from a PC.

If you have a router capable of PPPoE Relaying, then you can use a PC to split the traffic for itself & other PC's on the network with the use of ICS (Internet Connection Sharing) IF AND ONLY IF you're using a maximum of 2 accounts, since ICS can only share 1 interface. This implies that if you are dialing 2 or more accounts from the PC, you would only be able to share 1 of them using ICS...
