Are there Private Universities in SA?

Pardon my ignorance,

But are there such things as accredited Private Universities in South Africa?

If I understand correctly all the big universities in SA get funding also from the Gov?

I was wondering why we have no Private institutions that are free from political interference and statue burnings...... a place where the youth go to get an education, not to rampage!

There are a lot of colleges that offer private courses but exams with UNISA. Those are probably the best option, although obviously you will ultimately have a UNISA qualification.
 
Thanks Okies..... do any of these "Private" Universities have a campus lifestyle/experience similar to what the State Run ones use to have before letting the politicians of the future ruin?

Private for-profit Universities (Like Corinthian Colleges Inc in the USA) : Yes (Monash, Varsity College)
Private non-profit Universities (Like Harvard, Yale, Brown etc in the USA) : No

Why do we not have the latter? Because no one with enough money has donated the necessary funds needed to create one. South Africa unfortunately has never had a Carnegie (In the school space yes, but never in the university space)

EDIT : And are you under the impression that protest doesn't take place at private universities??

In that case you're wrong. University is not just about getting a degree (Although sadly a lot of public focus has been on that in recent years globally). Protest has been an integral part of university since the creation of the university system

It is an interesting discussion though. If Christo Wiese wants to leave behind a true legacy, a capital donation of R20b and an endowment of R10b could create a great private university in South Africa

Went to varsitycollege for a year and left. It was good since you pay out of your arse.
 
The best institution(university) for visual arts is private and is called Open Window. Inscape is another and they have been operating for many years. I think they are the oldest private university in the country. They are not cheap, but you get what you pay for.
