from this article..

The proposed DSL 192 and 384 monthly rental is R245 from August 1 2006 - a price decrease of R25 (9.3%) on the former and R114 (31.8%) on the latter.

There are also reductions of 24.1% on the monthly rentals for DSL 512 and DSL 1024. The proposed new monthly rental for DSL 512 is R362 (down from the current R477 monthly rental) while DSL 1024 monthly rentals are set to drop by R164 to R516.

192 and 384k are the same price? so soon..

384k = the new 192k.
512k = the new 384k.
1mb = the new 512k.

?

if so at least we are moving slightly forward.

no, you will have to wait probably a year or so to get your line upgraded from 192 to 384, and even after that, over 192 you can easily download like 30-40GB a month, do you have money to pay for that many gigs? If not what's the point of upgrading at all? And if you have the money to buy 30+ gigs per month, I am sure the 100 bucks price drop is nothing too exciting for you!

I am on a 192 line and after the line rental increase is subtraqcted from the ADSL line decrease my phone bill is going to drop a mammoth R17!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WTF is R17???????????????? Stupid MOFOS at Telkom

The effect of this is that the price reductions will have a minimal impact on telkom profits. the 192 product has by far the biggest number of users.

Any possible negative impact of other package decreases will most probably be offset by the predicted increase in ADSL users...

What they should have done in the beginning is to provide 64kb uncapped instead of 512kb, because if they are correct in that bandwidth is as precious as gold then that should have been all they would be capable of. They could have saved themselves loads of bad press about the capping situation, but they don't really give a crap and just do what they feel like. But maybe the international community would then really have a laugh at these clowns because the 64kb offering would be in the face of everybody. Capping a 512kb at least hides the truth a little behind their crap offerings.

The hidden meaning behind touching tomorrow is probably that they would be doing something about the situation tomorrow but when tomorrow comes then the touching tomorrow part just repeats itself and so it's been repeating itself over the years, and the South African public is still waiting for them to touch tomorrow.

plugger123, well said

problem is that 3GB per month is equivalent of 9.71 kbps, which is far less than a 64 kbps line, and I am ignoring the fact that it is bi-directional

I only got ADSL few months ago (rather than earlier) for the simple reason that I was downloading over my dial-up modem around 4GB per month for R280 (R70 per gig) including all costs (ISP+phone line+call more+calls), which is far cheaper than the R660 (R220 per gig) I am paying now for 3GB, only difference is that I can use them any time now, rather than just over the weekends with the dial-up.

well, my 384 perform like a 192 for the past few month, guess they just say "upgrade" as in ur package name, 384 and 192 will end up performing the same anyway.

lucky bugger, mines underperforming (22k/s)

Well they recently "degraded" everyone back to around 192kb speds.. p[retty funny.. now you guys lose out on a price reduction (not really counting R17 as much..) and get the same speed you had a few weeks ago.
hahaha

anyway.. and the point is that not everyone just wants to download tons every month, so a speed increase so that you can stream vids and have two people browsing etc. are handy. So no need to flame Telkom for giving a speed increase, its a good thing right?

I think they're getting rid of 192 because they wont be able to refer to it as broadband.

Not that 384 is any better in that regard but its the level ICASA wants to set.

192 was dropped as a price decrease on that one would have threatened the lucrative ISDN market

Indeed - telkom is a purveyor of fine antiques :rolleyes:

so you are going to stream video over you 2-3GB account? You will last less than a day or two! I do not appreciate this changes at all! There is no benefit for me! I can barely browse if I want to fit in the 3GB anyway, even if they give me a 1 Mbit line for R245, it makes no difference to me! If they want to make a difference, they should make a 30GB accounts at the price of todays 3GB account, then line speed increase will be appreciated!

Imagine a car manufacturer, they come with the exact same car as the one they were selling 5 years ago, but now it can do 240km/h rather than 180km/h due to an additional gear they added, not more powerful engine. If you drive above 180km/h you will be jailed anyway or the fines will kill you, so how the top speed improvemenet makes any difference to you when you still must drive under 120km/h, which your old car happily did anyway?

you can barley browse with 3 gigs? You shure about that, I can browse fine with two PCs being used and still download about a gig or so easy..

Oh and I didnt mean full on streaming, but watching vids on Youtube and stuff which has befcome increasingly popular isnt really possible on 192kb, most vids are just a bit higher quality. And im shure a increase can be seen from 192 to 384 in terms of browsing so I do see a need for it. like I said not everyone just works out how muc hthey can rape their ADSL for, in fact most poeple just want to browse faster and be able to use it for more stuff than dial-up.

Oh and the car analagies, well the funny hting is most cars could be alot cheaper if they only went up to 140km/h or so.. it is all we need. I get your point its just kind of flawed even though not in its reasoning because most people buy car because they are fast, yet they cant (legally anyway) use that speed so ja..

shouldnt Telkom launch like a 2Mbit service now? for R890 or something?

Ekhaatvensters, make me a favour, browse few sites like www.pbase.com, www.dpchallenge.com and similar, then maintain your own photo site (upload images to it etc.), then read some forums for couple of hours a day, like this forum, refreshing every so often to see if there are new posts, then open a text streaming applet with the E/$ GBP/$ rates for like 10 hours a day and another streaming applet with the gold/silver/oil, then browse to find some information over the web, opening dozens of pages to find what you are lookig for ... then look at your traffic for the day! If you are under 100MB, lol, let me know how did you do that! I would say that 3GB is so little that I have to restrict my browsing as well in order to fit in it, if I have to stream video and download software, I will need a second and even third 3GB account! People in this country don't realise how many things one can do with the internet, and this is only because of the fuc**ng telkom does everything to limit the people to only do what the internet was used for about 10 years ago! light web browsing with low resolution images and not too many of them!

Sorry to not share your positive outlook, but I think this "price reduction/speed adjustment" is absolute rubbish and people should NOT be happy about it, but realise that in 5 years time the internet in the rest of the world will replace the radio, TV, DVD shops and whatever else, while here we will be counting bytes just so we can have the connection alive until the end of the month!

do you really need it? You can finish your 3GB cap in just over 3 hours at that speed!

nope, but atleast for people that want it can have it, talking about Uncapped clients
