Are we too obsessed with graphics quality?

Nope. It seems everyone's always saying we're too obsessed with graphics quality when gameplay is more important, so most are pretty much saying game play is more important....

But it is.

I've played probably a million hours on rFactor, and maybe 100 on F1 2010/11/12/13, even though the former looks like a 2005 game, which it also is, while F1 2013 looks modern.

Gameplay is all that matters, in my opinion. And that's all it is, an opinion.

I have games on iOS, Android, Xbox lalala. Yet If I had a choice, I would play 2D Battle of Wesnoth all day every day.

Gameplay is more important. If two games are similar I will play the one with the better graphics though.

Still play old games from time to time like Theme Hospital, Dungeon Keeper 1/2, Half Life, N64 Legend of Zelda, etc. because they were fun.

I see eye candy as a bonus.

My opinion is: If a game has the best graphics in the world but the gameplay is really bad, why would anyone bother playing it ? I wouldn't.
The opposite, however, isn't always true.

But, I must admit, the improvement in graphics over the last decade has spoiled me a bit. I tried playing the original Tomb Raider 1 a while ago and just could not handle the poor graphics.

So, for me, gameplay wins, up to a certain point only though.

On an old forum I visited the people would be super anal not just about graphics but also had whole subsections devoted to discussing which driver is best with a certain game.

Originality is my biggest concern. Not so fussed about graphics. Games lately are all the same thing. I want something original. They need to remake the Police quest, Quest for glory, Space quest, Hugos house of horrors etc etc games.

Apart from dying a lot in modern games...do anyone find them challenging?

I know everyone is raving about Demon Souls. Yeah you die a lot but because of that reason (that EVERYONE dies a lot) does that not degrade the difficulty a bit. I paid hundreds of rands (worth of bandwidth) on Metro: last light. Clocked the game in 4 hours. Really??

Pretty much this. Tried installing and playing Diablo 2 again a couple of years back. Couldn't. It's just hideous.

Depends what you mean by 'challenging'? I don't play games to struggle with something stupid for a long time. Like lifting your head over a barrier for a split second too long and getting shot in the head. Fail, have to do over the whole mission. Screw that.

Many old games have also been freshened up by the community with enhancements & HD texture packs etc which is cool.
