Ever wonder what your life would be like if you could un-buy all of the useless stuff you accumulated over the years? Or if you didn’t pre-order Cyberpunk at full price, and got it on sale when it was fixed instead. Thats a 100% interest earning equivalent right there. Amazing. Then you put all of that into nVidia and AMD stock or whatever else. What if you didn’t go shopping when you were hungry, so you didn’t buy those extra donuts or supersize your meal. What if you read your book finished first before buying three more. What if you bought the plain tshirt instead of the one with the print that gets cracked after a few washes and saved that R200. What if you went to Woolworths today to buy what you need next summer while the end of season sale is on and saved 50%.

I could have been the wealthiest person I know.
 
Only on things like nuts and bolts and tech that I might use one day.................................
 
This weekend I have cleaned out 2 bin packets of empty Coke and Coo-ee empty 1.5-2l bottles. About 20+ empty 2l and 5l ice cream containers, and about another 20+ empty 1Kg yogurt and Flora/Rama containers.

I have retained maybe the equivalent amount.

I also have keep the empty Bakers 1Kg and 2Kg boxes going back various years (some from back to 1996 - although I use these for storage of my other hoards of electronics components and modules)

Slowly getting rid of the takealot boxes, printer cartridge boxes that I collected from work and more. Just realised I hoard containers - empty peanut butter, Jacobs Coffee, caustic soda, body moisturiser, baby powder containers that I have, although stuff like screws, blades, cable ties, and other small items are organized within some, the rest retained for future use.

Not sure what use I would get of contact lens storage cases though. I do have a freaking problem.

Thing is we live in the here and now. :)
 
I wouldn't classify myself as a hoarder in the true sense of the word but I classify hoarding as having more belongings than you can comfortably store in your current abode.

It’s more a psychological thing than anything else, hoarders typically don't hoard due to their current financial position and in any case property/rentals are at such a premium that the storage costs of hoarding goods out strip the value of the said goods in no time.

I get you, but maybe I can start to be more conscious now and see where that takes me.

My 2024 resolution.
 
Have 2 customers who are really bad hoarders

One is a gent who lives in a 6-bedroom house in Rondebosch. He was head librarian at the UCT Jagger Library. He has more than 50 000 books around the house, Floor to ceiling in most cases. When you walk in the door, you wend your way between the piles of books

Another inherited his house from his parents in 1959. He collects anything - broken gutters, old bricks. There are 3 broken down cars in the drive, all Ford Cortinas. About 20 years ago, the pile of stuff in the front room fell over so the door cannot be opened more than 20mm. Judging by the smell, there are mice in there. I offered to cut off the hinges but he won't have it

His neighbour offered him R4,5m cash for the house but when he found out that he would demolish the house, he declined the sale

The house on the other side of him sold for R6m last year

I voted Yes and commented as Yes as well. I am trying not to be a hoarder slowly. Gave away lot of things recently and put some things (nearly new stuff) on gumtree.

Hoarding is like OCD, people like to say they have OCD or hoard over mild tendencies but that’s different from the actual psychiatric diagnosis.
