My problem with emigrating is that you're effectively hitting the reset button on your life. Sure South Africa is circling the drain and is well on it's way to become 'another african country' but it's actually kinda nice here if you don't read news24.
Which depending on your perspective can be nice. I’m mid forty and am quite thankful for the reset. A new lease on life really.
South Africa is most certainly a nice place filled with nice people though.

I have UK passport as do my kids, daughter is already in Scotland. Only problem is my wife has a South African passport. But no worries, I can find another wife over there.
It costs a lot of money but you can take her over at a dependant or something like that

After hitting reset you have the ability to look at building a better future. For most there is little to no future in SA.

Why would you wait for rock bottom? At that point you may as well abandon your house - market will be flooded.
+1.
i'm worried we left it too late and our flights are booked already. took a loss just to dump the properties.
i'm no prophet, but i doubt there's 12 months worth of life left in this place
sort-off blurring the lines between expedient emigration and fleeing.

My trigger is water.

The moment we have to get water backup and we have "water shedding" - my house is on the market and i'm out of here. I can live in Europe (citizen) but I prefer the USA which will be tricky as I don't have employment there atm thought i'm working on setting something up as a backup.
Your property is going to lose a lot of value if you only want to leave then.

Just get a boor hole or leave now.

Not actively looking, but if I get presented an opportunity I will go.
USA or GTFO though.

Canukistan, Western Europe, Ausfailia and New Cuckland have worse prospects than South Africa.
yeah, i guess you'd be staying right here mate -
"if i get presented an opportunity" what a muppet way to think
then again, they have heaps of idiots over there already, you'd fit right in, crack pipe and all

Can you not register your marriage in Scotland? It then enables travel on a long-term spousal visa, and possible citizenship no?
